the author craftsman did an excellent job,

I was expecting to see actual Anglo-Saxon tools. (in truth, there were only 1 or 2 shown in the whole book) what IS shown, are a collection of accurate as possible, usable, re creations of actual tools found,... and in That, the author craftsman did an excellent job,... I would give it more stars, if I had actually been aware that that was what I was purchasing,.... and had knowingly bought it as such. The history and other facts are clearly included,.... the book is well done. my ONLY issue is the reproductions should have been clearly stated as such, but weren't. and so I felt like I'd taken a bait, only to find it false and not as expected.

Technology I Can Understand

This book is written by a craftsman who has made reproductions of many Anglo-Saxon tools. It has clear photos of a number of these reconstructions, and useful commentary from the point of view of someone who actually uses tools. The bulk of the book is arranged by the type of occupation in which tools were used - for example, agriculture - and often walks through the basic steps followed in that occupation - clearing land, preparing soil, digging, harvesting. I would have like more detail on how the tools were used, but there is enough information to get a picture of how our ancestors over a thousand years ago worked. Many of the tools are familiar from the modern workshop or garden shed, but there were surprises to my modern mind, such as that saws were probably not used for woodworking. Interesting and well written.
