Not an h.264 Book
By M. Magee
Richardson book (H.264 and MPEG-4 Video Compression) is the best book on h.264 -- by virtue of being the only one.

The cover of Symes' book proclaims "Featuring: JVT/H.264/MPEG-4 Part 10". However, there's one chapter on JVT, and it is somewhat sketchy. The only level of real detail is on the transform. The rest of the AVC/h.264 standard receives brief and superficial coverage. The coverage of WMV-9, an analogous next gen codec, is even sketchier. It doesn't mention the SMPTE VC-9 standardization effort, based on WMV-9.

Next gen codecs aside, it's not a bad book as a general overview of compression. It has a breezy style that's easy to read. While some sections are quite thorough, it doesn't consistently dig past the surface.

Here's an example:

"Context-based adaptive binary arithmetic coding (CABAC) is a development of arithmetic coding mentioned in Chapter 3."

-- page 243, Chapter 12, JVT

"Explanation of the arithmetic coding process is beyond the scope of this book."

-- page 47, Chapter 3, Entropy Coding

In a nut shell, this book is a good addition to the video processing bookshelf, but it won't stand as a definitive reference to this new protocol. Maybe next edition.

"Buy Together" recommendation not appropriate
By Peter D. Symes
I am the author of "Digital Video Compression" and I have to caution you that Amazon's "Buy Together" recommendation is NOT appropriate. "Video Compression Demystified" is an earlier version of the same book, and everything in there (except for a few mistakes!) is in the 2003 "Digital Video Compression". You would waste your money buying both!
Enjoy!

Very Comprehensive
By Dr. R. A. Johnson
This is probably the best overall book on video compression on Amazon. I gave it five stars because of that. The only down side is that it is now a bit dated, with the creation of newer and better MPEG4 compression schemes (like H264) since the book was written (2003). If the author came out with a 2nd edition of the book that would be great and I would buy it immediately. Still, this book gave me a very good understanding of the fundamentals of video compression and was well worth it.

Bollywood Storm is a lyrical, mystical murder mystery, set in Bollywood-style. The mazza of this story unfolds in two Books, spanning two continents

Elanna Forsythe George is a Boston born, New York forensic scientist who only takes on cold cases. Stone cold dead cases. She solves mysteries in unusual ways with her accidentally acquired, para-mystical abilities. Her cases come to her a few years after high-powered mainstream investigations, police and legal proceedings have all failed, and there's a dead end. But she doesn't take every case.

Book II: Mumbai
Elanna's unpredictable mystical powers lead her to Mumbai, where she must attempt to work with her two headstrong South Asian alter egos to infiltrate the Bollywood scene, unravel the serpentine Bhujangen cult that controls the Mumbai filmi-industry, and finally expose the dark forces behind the deaths of renowned Bollywood director Rajesh Sharma, and more than half of his illegitimate children.

Review
Elanna shimmies and gyrates with fluid ease to the pulsating beat of an Indian skaa-bangra-hop fusion band in a steaming Mumbai nightclub. No,wait. That's not Elanna, the psychic criminologist from New York City. She's only sharing the experiences of a hedonistic thrill-seeker named Christine.

This is a powerful, well-wrought sequel to the first book, offering further insight into Elanna's intriguing character -- and revealing vividly what it must be like to be the unwilling psychic channel for spirits both living and dead. . . . And the writer, N.K.Johel, delivers an even more masterful writing performance in Book II than in the first part, frequently throwing Elanna -- and the reader -- into these fascinating dream-states, in which Elanna feels and experiences episodes both erotic and grim.
...
Cut to the interior of Mumbai's exclusive Extemporaneous Glorious Gate Hotel. Elanna is there in deep disguise, "cloaked" by fellow psychic agent Harshad Verma. Together with co-agent Laila Durga, they are tracking one of the most dangerous goondas in the world -- a stone-cold killer named Johnny Akkhara. To make matters worse, his paramystical abilities are said to be the equal of any of the three currently shadowing him.

Then, it's later. Much later. Months have gone by and no one has seen Elanna. The worst is feared. Suddenly, she shows up, sheathed and morphed into the body of a beautiful young South Asian woman named Rakhi. Elanna's been hijacked, body and soul, through the supernatural skills of the Mother of Time, Kaali Ma. Elanna struggles night and day to regain her identity and resume her hunt for the killer.

Where does it all end in this wildly imaginative mystery? This second book has turned into Ellery Queen meets Stephen King -- and it's all utterly believable, so skilled is the author at portraying the deep dilemma in which Elanna finds herself. And, again, the out-of-body sequences are superb. The reader will be rooting for Elanna to break free before it's too late.
But wait. Who's the tall, elderly man with a beige turban, wearing a matching kurta and pajamas with red, black and gold mojan on his feet?

...
Through it all, this talented storyteller keeps us firmly grounded in believability, infusing the narrative with hundreds of Hindi phrases that make the reader feel that he is actually in Mumbai, experiencing all the rich diversity that India has to offer.

As to the question of how Rajesh Sharma died, along with a half-dozen of his sons and daughters, the author ties up all the loose ends in an exciting and thrill-packed ending that should satisfy even the most discerning mystery lovers -- not to mention those with a love of all things paranormal.

About the Author
Biography N.K. Johel is a third generation Sikh-Canadian as her grandfather, who was born in the 1860's or so, emigrated to North America during the first decade of the twentieth century. Yet due to many complex historical happenings, she did not begin to learn English until she started primary school. She gravitated to art, music, writing and theatre during her school years in Lake Cowichan. As a young adult, she moved to Nanaimo to study theatre at Vancouver Island Univerity, and then to Vancouver to study painting and fine arts at Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design. Her interest in literature developed informally. She credits Toni Morrison's Jazz and Michael Ondaatje's Running In The Family as the works that rekindled her interest in writing.

School Sports
By Phyllis Hirshleifer
This is an early novel which will appeal to readers who are familiar with British school sports more than to the ordinary American reader. Wodehouse's comic genius and his understanding of human character are evident, but the plot does not build to the kind of hilarious climax one finds in some of the later works.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Safely returned from his perilous stint among Northmen, 12-year-old Jack reflects, "That's the nature of adventures. . . . They're nasty while they're happening and only fun later." For readers, though, there's satisfaction in both the nasty and the fun, and this sequel to The Sea of Trolls (2004) offers full measures of both. After Jack learns that his often-bratty little sis is a changeling (and that his real sister likely dwells with hobgoblins), a misguided exorcism results in Lucy's disappearance. Then the young bard must descend into the out-of-time Land of the Silver Apples to retrieve both of his lost siblings. In that richly imagined realm, surprises include a reunion with shield-maiden Thorgil as well as creatures whose appearances deceive—shape-shifting knuckers; hideous yet likable hobgoblins; and lovely, soulless elves, whose inability to grow or age tinges their existence with tragedy. Occasionally, one wishes for a greater range of emotional tone to the predicaments, which plunge Jack into deep despair perhaps too consistently, but Farmer beautifully balances pell-mell action and quieter thematic points, especially the drawbacks of immortality and the wild tangle of Christian and pagan traditions in eighth-century Britain. Like the druidic life force Jack taps, this hearty adventure, as personal as it is epic, will cradle readers in the "hollow of its hand." Mattson, Jennifer

So many myths!
By Elizabeth M. Cullen
More adventures with Jack and The Bard, Dragon Tongue. A few old friends, some new ones, ancient Celtic and Nordic gods mixed with early Christian beliefs, elves, and some magical creatures along with Jack's growing sense of responsibility for his own responses add up to great suspense and realizations. Never a boring scene.

THE LAND OF THE SILVER APPLES is less humorous and more fanciful than its predecessor
By KidsReads
Jack is an apprentice bard who is recently returned to his village after his adventures as a Viking captive. His village, having endured a difficult year, has decided to participate in a need-fire ceremony. All the fires in the village are extinguished and then restarted with new flame kindled from two logs rubbed against each other. This is done so that the misfortunes of the past do not linger into the new year.

The ceremony goes awry when Jack's sister Lucy introduces a metal necklace into the ritual. Metal, the village's Bard warns, cannot be used in these kinds of ceremonies because one can never tell where it's been. If metal has been used as a weapon or for some other evil purpose, it perverts the life force. Believing Lucy has been possessed by an evil spirit, a group of villagers takes her to the nearby Saint Fillian's well, which is believed to cure people of possession.

What they find there shocks and horrifies Jack, who inadvertently offends the spirit of the place. He accidentally causes an earthquake and all the water in the surrounding area to disappear. It is finally decided that Jack and the other young companions --- Lucy; Pega, a freed slave so ugly people believe she is cursed; and Brutus, a charismatic descendent of Lancelot -- should travel the Hollow Road to the realm of the elves and request the water's return.

Children, the Bard explains, are young enough to resist the lure of elves. "'It's a curious thing, but this is one area where children are stronger than adults,'" he says. '"They aren't as easily taken in by illusions, and elves above all else, are masters of illusion.'"

THE LAND OF THE SILVER APPLES is not the first book to set children on a perilous journey underground. The companions entertain themselves, Tolkien-style, with riddles, stories and songs. Like the children in C.S. Lewis's subterranean adventure THE SILVER CHAIR, they must bolster their memories of the world above ground to survive in a place without sun. Their descent into darkness brings them into the realm of all manner of magical creatures. In addition to the elves, there are the knuckers, kelpies, hobgoblins and the mysterious yarthkins. They also encounter several other humans along the Hollow Road, including the severe yet pious Father Severus, and Thorgil, the shield maiden from THE SEA OF TROLLS who is separated from the rest of her raiding party.

The success of Harry Potter has created a renaissance in children's fantasy. Faerie has been an especially popular theme often featuring stories about romances between worlds. Farmer sticks with the medieval construct of elves as fallen angels, not damned to hell, but without souls. As the beings who would not choose sides in Lucifer's war with Heaven, they must earn their souls to get another chance at paradise. Their immortality and lack of compassion make them cruel and fickle beings. They are vain, easily bored and difficult to please.

Farmer uses the conflict with the elves to explore different cosmologies. Jack comes from a druidic-pagan tradition and is dedicated to the life force. Thorgil is the sole representative of the Norse viewpoint in this book, with its emphasis on bravery and infamy. They are joined by Father Severus, a severe but well-meaning monk, who is a devout Christian. Much of the humor here comes from the different characters responding to situations according to their faith. It is also notable that they must use the strengths of all their different faiths to work together and overcome challenges. Jack's approach is primarily intuitive, Thorgil's unflinchingly courageous, and Father Severus introduces an element of discipline that the children need to complete their mission.

THE LAND OF THE SILVER APPLES is less humorous and more fanciful than its predecessor. It easily can be read as a stand-alone title, but readers of the first book will miss Olaf One-Brow, the fierce and vigorous Northman from THE SEA OF TROLLS. What transpires underground involves several great sacrifices. While the companions escape relatively unscathed, it is certain that a great shift in their world is taking place, one that will be revealed in the final book in the series, THE ISLANDS OF THE BLESSED, expected out in 2009.

Nancy Farmer is a phenomenal author for young people. Her work has an ambitious reach far beyond what many adults would expect children to grasp. While she can be read and appreciated by fans of traditional fantasy, her work has a breadth and depth that goes far beyond most invented worlds into the history of human belief. Like her previous book in the series, Farmer put extensive research into THE LAND OF THE SILVER APPLES and includes a bibliography at the end of the book. Her work focuses on an interfaith or intercultural approach to conflict. It features many layers of ambiguous powers working together to attain the most harmonious results. At a time when the newspapers contain many religious and ethnic conflicts, work like Farmer's is essential to understanding our histories, imagining new realities and engaging with the inner workings of the human heart.

The rare, wonderful middle book.
By C. Mangone
I love this woman. I love every single thing she's written, albeit some more than others, so I am admittedly very biased when it comes to her works.

The book takes place after The Sea of Trolls when, among other things, Jack's sister Lucy is taken by elves and he has to travel underground to their lands to get her back.

The Land of the Silver Apples is such a good middle book. The story moves along at a great pace, and not once did I want to put it down. She has a delicate touch with the religious issues inherent in writing in this time period (Christian vs. Druidic vs. Nordic), and writes each in such a way that none of them are put down. It's quite lovely to not have to put up with an author hammering their beliefs down my throat.

I also adored her take on elves. I've never seen anything like it. Very refreshing and original, things quite lacking in the general portrayal of elves.

All her vivid, distinct characters are what really what give this book it's umph, though. Jack has matured, though he still has a lot of growing up to do, and seeing the great variety of characters through is alternately wise, sympathetic, jealous, and juvenile-ly hateful perspectives is just wonderful. A great amount of the cast from the Sea of Trolls returns, and the new additions to the cast are fully-fleshed and original.

The only disappointment I had was that there wasn't a greater role for the Picts. Or, rather, the Pictish Beast. ...it just seemed odd that one of the chapter headers was a Pictish Beast, it's mentioned once in a chapter, it's in the glossary, but... there's nothing else on it. Well, I guess it's such an indistinct beastie that I can say I wouldn't have wanted to tackle it myself.

All in all, another amazing book from an amazing author. I'm waiting on the edge of my seat for the next book!

4 "I love when an author turns the hero around" stars!
By Amanda Clark
What do you ultimately say about a book that had no sex, very little physical contact between the MC's and a low angst threshold but still convey how much you enjoyed the book?

Having read the first book in this series, I can tell you that this author has a pattern of writing sweetly clean yet exciting and tension filled romance. It's what sold me on that book and what I mainly enjoyed about this one too, aside from how she turned her hero from Douche to Darling . This is the classic "Enemies to lovers" story. Both Hailey and Connor are set up by their agents to fix his tarnished image and to get her some exposure for her writing. Connor is a famous baseball player and Hailey writes YA paranormal stories. They are like oil and water but for the duration of a few months they must get along and be seen in public together to satisfy their respective deals with said agents.

It's pretty self explanatory. They hate each other almost instantly. Connor comes across as a HUGE prick in the beginning when they first meet and I am so thankful that I wasn't in a PMS mood when I started this or the Red Dragon would have prevented me from giving him a chance. Connor turned out to be fabulous. He was charming (Which pissed Hailey off and added deliciousness to the story) laid back and very thoughtful it turned out. Hailey tried so hard to use his reputation as a ladies man to keep her safe from him but what can you do? Hailey was spunky and sarcastic and that's always a plus for me in the heroine department. They build a sweet foundation based on mutual respect and friendship, didn't play any games with each other and had an adorably, almost PAINFULLY sweet romance. It was a gradual build that took time to come to fruition but like I said... I enjoyed it very much. I'm an intensely moody reader and sometimes I want to read a book without all the thrusting, grinding and slobbering.

And now I know I can turn to Caitie Quinn to fill that role when I need it. I read this one out of sequence but I'm excited to be getting to the rest of the books in this series. You won't find saccharin sweetness here but you will find two rock solid main characters surrounded by a cast of amazing secondary people who bring out the best in them and a whole bunch of smiley swoony goodness

Worthy of future rereads
By Amazon Customer
My favorite of the series. For me it was not only worthy of a reread but to be added to my "favorites" collections, which means an every other year reread at a minimum. I always love this authors writing. I'm also a fan of the "girlfriend of convenience" trope. Together it was a hit out of the park for me. I thought both characters were funny and witty. The heroine was completely relatable to me. The characters were well developed. It had EVERYTHING I love in a Rom-Com. Can't wait for the next story in the series!

Stuck in the "Friend Zone"
By Trevelyan
Not even for a minute did I think Connor was into Hailey.
I can see them being comfortable from the time they spent together but nothing more than that.
There was absolutely no passion there. Straight up "Friend Zone" stuff.
I don't really feel like it was romance.
Not worth the money.

B.F. Skinner: A Reappraisal, by Marc N Richelle

B.F. Skinner died in August 1990. He had been praised as one of the most influential psychologists of the 20th century, but was also attacked by a variety of opponents within and outside the field of psychology. This introduction to his work is first of all a guide to a correct reading of his writings, a reading devoid of the distortions and misinterpretations often conveyed by many commentators, including psychologists. It frames Skinner's contributions with reference to major European traditions in psychological sciences, namely Pavlov, Freud, Lorenz and Piaget. Crucial aspects of Skinner's theory and methodological stands are discussed in the context of contemporary debates: special attention is devoted to the relationship of psychology with biology and the neurosciences, to the cognitivist movement, to the status of language and to the explanation of novelty and creativity in human behaviour.; Finally, Skinner's social and political philosophy is presented with an emphasis on the provocative aspects of an analysis of current social practices which fail to solve most of the urgent problems humankind is confronted with today. Both in science proper and in human affairs at large, Skinner's thought is shown to be not behind, as is often claimed, but ahead of the times, be it in his interactive view of linguistic communication, in his very modern use of the evolutionary analogy to explain the dynamics of behaviour, or in his vision of ecological constraints.

Outside the Skinner Box
By calmly
An exceptional book. Marc Richelle was a student of Skinner's (and Piaget's) and co-translated some of Skinner's works into French. He seems able to identify Skinner's mistakes but also to represent well Skinner's achievements.

One subject Richelle ventures into is why there were so many attacks on Skinner, often misrepresenting his positions badly and at time attacking him personally. In a chapter on language, Richelle considers the vicious attacks by Chomsky and how, by ignoring them, Skinner lost an opportunity to influence psycholinguistics.

Richelle's understanding of the "Skinner box" and "operant conditioning" are liberating. "Operant conditioning" may be misnamed, "operant learning" seems more accurate. Skinner may have needed to isolate rats in boxes so he could understand some basic principles of behavior, but even a rat, outside a box, displays a rich set of behavior which we can not predict. The box is a reflection of Skinner's limitation, that he could't grasp the full richness of our behavior or a rats, so he needed the help of the box and its simple environment for a while to get a start on how organism's behave. Skinner appreciated how rich the behavior of orgnanism is, but he also appreciated how much scientific understanding of how we behave could benefit us.

Richelle's discussion of Skinner's social concerns may be the strongest part of this book, as evidenced by Skinner's writings and inventions on education, by his concern for the plight of woman, and by his concern for all of us who have been duped into maintaining the status quo. Richelle shows how, seemingly paradoxicaly, the belief in our autonomy encouraged in us by controlling agencies like the government, works to keep us ineffective and under oppressive controls.

Would this book function well as an introduction to Skinner, as Richelle himself intended? Anyone, including a lay reader, might benefit from reading some of Skinner first, for example "Walden Two" or "Beyond Freedom And Dignity". But Skinner's ideas may seem too foreign without preparation by a good guide such as Marc Richelle. On the other hand, Richelle himself is fairly challenging. If you haven't read Skinner and are interested, I suggest you choose yourself whether to start with Skinner or Richelle. If your choice seems like tough reading, try switching to the other. One way or the other, getting to understand Skinner may be one of the best things you ever did for yourself. The more of us who have at least some scientific understanding of behavior, the better for all of us.

A European take on Skinner
By Jim Farmelant
Marc Richelle is a Belgian psychologist who studied in Geneva where, not surprisingly, he came under the influence of Piaget. However, as he began to read B.F. Skinner's work his viewpoint shifted towards radical behaviorism while still retaining a great respect for Piaget. His book, *B.F. Skinner: A Reappraisal*, is written as an evaluation of Skinner from the standpoint of a European psychologist, and he relates Skinner's work with that of such prominent European psychologists as Pavlov, Freud, Lorenz, Piaget, and Vygotsky. Richelle provides an overview of Skinner's career and how his views evolved over time. For those who are familiar with Skinner's work much of this should be familiar, but they still might learn a good deal from Richelle's comparison of Skinner to his European contemporaries. Richelle's evaluation of Skinner in reference to European psychology makes his book unique among the studies of Skinner's work.

Richelle sketches out Skinner's contributions to experimental methodology in psychology, including the invention of the Skinner box and the development of a research methodology based on single-organism experiments, as opposed to the traditional method of comparing experimental groups with control groups. He reviews Skinner's challenge to traditional S-R models of behavior, those psychologies that Skinner labeled methodological behaviorisms. Such psychologies include the behaviorisms of John B. Watson and Clark Hull as well as the cognitive school of psychology. For all these schools, psychology is in one way or another the science which attempts to understand behavior in terms of stimulus-response pairings. This is true even for the cognitivists, who differ only in that they posit intervening cognitive mechanisms between stimulus and response. Against these schools, Skinner posited his own radical behaviorism which centered around his conception of operant conditioning (a conception that owed much to the work of Thorndike on the Law of Effect). In his elaboration of operant mechanisms, Skinner proposed to understand the development of behavior in Darwinian terms - that is, the selection of responses by the organism's environment.

Richelle devotes one chapter to exploring Skinner's debt to Pavlov, which was certainly very large. Skinner borrowed much of his scientific vocabulary from Pavlov as well some of his methodology. However, contrary to Pavlov, Skinner contended that there were two types of conditioning rather than one: traditional Pavlovian conditioning (which he called respondent conditioning) and operant conditioning. Although both kinds of conditioning followed similar laws, there were also significant differences which required the use of different experimental methodologies. Skinner argued that the two types of conditioning had different neuroanatomical roots, with Pavlovian conditioning rooted in the autonomic nervous system and operant conditioning rooted in the somatic nervous system. This thesis was eventually refuted by Neal Miller in 1968 when he showed that, contrary to Skinner, autonomic responses could be operantly conditioned (1).

Concerning the influence of Pavlov on Skinner, Richelle concludes that, while large, it has been overstated by many commentators.

Richelle devotes a chapter to Freud in Skinner's writings. He notes that while Skinner was highly critical of Freud's mentalism, he had many kind things to say about Freud's work. Skinner admired Freud for being a determinist, for being an astute observer of human behavior, and for having discarded consciousness and introspection as tools for understanding mental processes. Freud was praised by Skinner for having shown that mental activity does not require consciousness and that many of the most important aspects of mental activity occur beyond its ken. Skinner saw much value in the concepts of Freudian defense mechanisms (i.e., repression, sublimation, projection, rationalization) which in *Science and Human Behavior* and *Verbal Behavior* he sought to show could be translated into the language of behaviorism.

Skinner also argued that Freud's modeling of human personality in terms of id, ego, and superego could be restated in terms of the various sorts of contingencies of reinforcement that control human behaviors. Thus the Freudian id was seen as corresponding to biologically based reinforcers and was responsible for behaviors that were ultimately reinforced by food, water, sexual contact and other primary biological reinforcers. The superego - the "conscience" of Judeo-Christian theology - was in turn responsible for the behaviors that control the id, using techniques of self-control that are acquired from the group. Id and superego inevitably clash, and their conflicts are in turn mediated by the ego, which besides attempting to reach a compromise between the id and superego also deals with the practical exigencies of the environment.

Richelle goes on to discuss Skinner and ethology, especially that of Konrad Lorenz. Skinner was often harshly critical of much of the work of the ethologists, including Lorenz, but he came to perceive the value of their work. He agreed with them concerning the necessity of applying a Darwinian standpoint to behavior (which meant understanding it in selectionist terms) but he faulted them for not making a clear distinction between different levels - the biological level, the behavioral level, and in humans the cultural level - to which a Darwinian analysis could be applied. (Interestingly, Skinner faulted the sociobiologists on similar grounds.) Skinner's comments on the three levels of selectionism is relevant to such matters as the debate over directionality in history which Robert Wright defends in his book *Nonzero* and which is also defended by Alan Carling from the standpoint of a selectionist Marxism (2).

Concerning Piaget, Richelle says that both Skinner and Piaget were largely ignorant of each other's work, a situation which he finds to have been understandable but somewhat regrettable, since in certain respects their perspectives were more complementary rather than antagonistic. Piaget's constructivism was explicitly developmentalist, an approach that Richelle sees Skinner as having under-emphasized. Also, Piaget's work was concerned with the development of the higher cognitive functions in humans, whereas Skinner's work tended to focus on those aspects of behavior that humans share with other species. But despite the fact that they came out of quite different psychological traditions, there were some underlying similarities, in Richelle's opinion. Both men attempted to take Darwinism seriously, which meant understanding behavior in evolutionist, selectionist terms. Skinner's emphasis on knowledge as action was surprisingly similar to Piaget's views. Richelle at one point compares quotations from Skinner and Piaget. From Skinner's *About Behaviorism* he quotes:

"Operant behavior is essentially the exercise of a power: it has an effect on the environment."

Likewise, Richelle quotes from Piaget's *Adaptation vitale et psychologies de l'intelligence*:

"The organism acts upon the environment, rather than being simply submitted to it. As to the highest levels, where behavior plays a non-negligible role, this role is by no means limited to compensate for alterations or aggressions from the environment: it may consist, on the contrary, in conquering actions aimed at extending the environment."

Richelle points out that for both Piaget and Skinner the emphasis in studying behavior was not on the stimulus, nor upon the mind, but rather upon action itself.

Richelle argues that Piaget's work on cognitive development could have benefited from a greater understanding of Skinner's work on operant learning since, like Skinner, he was committed to applying Darwinian analogies to the understanding of behavior. Skinner's analysis of operant conditioning could have helped Piaget to substantiate his thesis that evolution, or selectionism, is applicable to behavior on a multiplicity of levels.

Richelle only very briefly discusses the work of the Soviet psychologist Vygotsky, but he notes some similarities to Skinner, including the fact that both Vygotsky's psychology of activity and Skinner's radical behaviorism shared an emphasis on action as the focus for psychological study. They also shared similar views concerning the social origins of human self-awareness.

Richelle has a useful chapter on the Skinner-Chomsky debate in psycholinguistics. He agrees with Skinner that Chomsky fundamentally misunderstood Skinner's work, but he also faults Skinner for, among other things, neglecting the developmental dimension which Chomsky emphasized, for failing to respond to Chomsky's attacks, and for failing to engage the psycholinguists generally. However, Richelle discerns a tendency within psycholinguistics to move towards positions reminiscent of Skinner's without generally acknowledging the Skinnerian origins of the views that they are adopting.

The last few chapters of the book engage Skinner's views on education and society. Richelle generally endorses most of them with enthusiasm and he gives a good restatement of the arguments of *Beyond Freedom and Dignity*. Richelle reiterates Skinner's critique of "autonomous man" and how this notion, along with commonsense mentalistic psychology, performs an important ideological function: persuading people that they are free agents while concealing the existence of behavioral controls. This wouldn't be so bad, Richelle thinks, except that the types of behavioral controls in place have failed to solve our most important social problems. Therefore, Richelle agrees with Skinner that a challenge to the notions of autonomous man and mentalism is necessary if we are to make social progress.

One section of this chapter bears the heading "Mentalism as a Tool of Power," which sums up Richelle's (and Skinner's) point regarding control. Mentalism promotes the idea that the way toward change is to change people's minds or hearts, not the environmental conditions in which they live. This generally suits the dominant political and economic elites, since mentalism turns people's attention inwards, diverting them from perceiving the actual determinants of their lives, especially the more or less hidden behavioral controls. By positing a special freedom, the myth of autonomous man conditions the masses to blame themselves for their fate, and the status quo is thus rendered safe from questioning or modification. No surprise, then, that Skinner, even with Richelle's advocacy, is unlikely to catch on.

Looking Good
By Dr Jack L Edwards
Although I purchased the book as a reference text for a number of issues related to radical behaviorism, I have had a chance to look over several items in the book and have not been disappointed. Although much of Chomsky's criticism of Skinner's verbal behavior has been answered and Chomsky shown to be little more than a distraction, albeit for far too long, this book added to my insights over this controversy. There are many more issues covered in the book and I certainly recommend it as a reference on the variety of issues it covers.

The physical quality of the book itself could be better. I have a feeling that it won't sustain too many readings before it starts to come apart, but I could be wrong.
