Eric Shipton was an adventurer when adventure meant traveling to places for which no maps existed, scaling mountains whose heights were uncalculated, and encountering people whom no westerner had ever met. That Untravelled World, originally published in 1969, is his autobiography, written near the end of his career, when the passing of time had deepened his reflections on his many accomplishments and companions.

Shipton’s story begins with his early childhood, his first climbs in the Alps, his decision to be a coffee farmer rather than attend university, and his early climbs in Africa. He recounts his introduction to Bill Tilman, through a letter Tilman sent asking for advice about climbing Mount Kenya. This introduction lead to one of the most famous climbing partnerships in history—as bonded in pursuit of adventure as Holmes and Moriarty were in solving crimes.

In 1951 Shipton led an expedition to explore the south side of Everest. His small party of four (plus Sherpas) explored Everest’s Western Cwm to determine if the South Col could be climbed from there. In 1952, unable to get a permit to climb Everest, Shipton and his team climbed “eleven mountains between 21,000 and 23,000 feet, and a number of smaller peaks.” Shipton was expected to be named the leader of the momentous 1953 British Everest expedition but, surprisingly, John Hunt was chosen instead. Of the slight, Shipton wrote, “I had often deplored the exaggerated publicity accorded to Everest expeditions and the consequent distortion of values. Yet, when it came to the point, I was far from pleased to withdraw from this despised limelight; nor could I fool myself that it was only the manner of my rejection that I minded.”

So disappointed was Shipton in being overlooked to lead the Everest summit expedition that he left Britain for South America. He never again returned to the Himalaya yet, as this book reveals, his adventures were far from over.

About the Author
Eric Shipton participated in five Everest expeditions, made the first ascent of Mount Kenya's Nelion Peak, and with H.W. Tilman he reached the Nanda Devi Sanctuary. With Frank Smythe he reached the summit of Kamet (25,447 feet) at the time, the highest summit ever to be reached. He wrote six other mountain travel and exploration books which Mountaineers Books has published in an omnibus edition.

Absolutely wonderful read -- I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in Shipton (the person), the "Golden Age of Himalayan Mountaineering," and/or travel writing in general. Shipton is somewhat parsimonious in his writing -- a fact he acknowledges in the last chapter -- which is only unfortunate in so far as one finishes reading the book much sooner than desired.

Missing Kentucky, even when one lives there, is the emotional linchpin of the nine spare and stunning stories in this second collection by Offutt (Kentucky Straight; The Good Brother). Many of the entries previously appeared in magazines such as Esquire and Granta; "Melungeons" has been included in Best American Short Stories 1994. All deal with the magnetic pull of the Kentucky hills on those born there, and while a common theme enriches the cyclical nature of the collection, its repetitiveness sometimes makes one wish for a change of focus. Some narratives are straightforward: in "Darla," the eponymous protagonist returns to the hills after 30 years in Ohio, realizing that's where she belongs only after a real estate agent presses her to sell out. Other tales are more intricate. A Kentucky trucker washes up in an Oregon flood in "High Water Everywhere," then decides to go back to the hills after encountering a deputy sheriff who has resisted the impulse to leave his native turf because he knows everybody's intimate lives, and "the knowing keeps me here." "Two-Eleven All Around" plumbs a well of dark humor when the divorced narrator discovers "you raise someone else's [kids] while a stranger takes care of yours." From the protagonist of "Out of the Woods," who's never left his Kentucky county before, to the narrator of "Tough People," who learns in Montana that he's ruined for going back, the stories all resonate with isolation and lawlessness born in the Kentucky hills. Offutt's characters may leave the woods?that is, rural eastern Kentucky?but it doesn't leave them. Some have escaped to town or gone west, others have returned after trying to live elsewhere. Offutt's writing is as simple and straightforward as his characters, who are not angst-ridden or introspective but often use sex, alcohol, or violence to get through the day. Because I love short stories and Southern writers, I discovered Chris Offutt. Out of the Woods was his first book I read. It won't be the last. His fiction is serious, his characters haunting. Haunting because of the writer's honesty. Offutt turns on the overhead light and throws off the sheet. His protagonist in "Two-Eleven All Around" sums up all of his characters when he ponders, "Sometimes I don't think I've done anything to leave my mark in this world. I'm the kind of person the world leaves a mark on." Offutt has left his mark.

High Praise for Chris Offutt

Presently you won't see Chris Offutt's name on any bestseller's list, but please don't let that discourage you from reading his wonderful work. In "Out of the Woods," Offutt follows the lives of ex-cons, alcoholics, gamblers, and drifters as they struggle to find direction and purpose.
Offutt's characters share one common thread, they were all born and raised in Appalachian communities in Kentucky. Reared in a culture in and of itself, these Kentuckians face harsh realities as they try to carve out a path for themselves in mainstream America. Most grapple with a strong desire to get out and see the world yet simultaneously they fight the urge to return to the comfort and security of home. In "Moscow, Idaho," a young prisoner on grave digging duty aims to turn over a new leaf and wonders if he will ever find a woman, a good job, and a town to settle in. "Two-Eleven All Around" is the story of a man who is so desperate for attention from his girlfriend, that he stages his own arrest in hope that she will hear about it while listening to her radio. These tales combine perseverance and heartbreak into poetic prose.
There have been comparisons of Offutt's writing to that of Raymond Carver's. Only in my opinion, Offutt is better. Carver's characters tend to present with a flat affect, but Offutt is able to take the reader subtly and deeply into his characters minds. Chris Offutt excels at what he writes about because he lived the life of his characters. He grew up in a small Appalachian community and at the age of nineteen he meandered across the country where he went through more than fifty jobs before returning to home and raising a family. Chris Offutt has come full circle and there is no doubt that he will find himself a place in the world of literature.

All those guys had names

Having read this novel through several times...one of the most poignant, if salient, points it makes is that the fellows with Private Ryan defending the Alamo all had names and hometowns. They all had mothers, families, and were as anxious to get through the war as anyone else. This excellent book also fills in a lot of the missing details that for some reason were edited from the movie. For instance, we see the Miller's squad drive away in a Jeep... then they are walking. In the movie, so much happens that it is easy to overlook this gap. Also, when Wade is shot, the book explains much better how it happened. In the film, you have to wonder why Wade didn't stay behind instead of Upham. For those of us who have seen the film over and over, it's likely we'll want to read the book over and over too. And that's part of the joy in this book. Great job, Mr. Collins.

An interesting piece of military fiction

I have not seen the movie that this book is based off of, but it is a well-known movie so I was interested when I saw this book at a yard sale.
I found it to be a quick, exciting read, but typical of military fiction. Early on, you are introduced to several members of the group, yet few of them make it through the first action. After that, the main characters continue nearly unharmed, except for two who are killed. It was somewhat surprising that nearly all of the group were killed in the final battle, but it was not surprising that Upham survived while Miller died. Nor is it surprising that the Germans are repelled in the end.
One slight problem I had was with the ending. The battle is nearly over, but there is still a little fighting going on when the American reinforcements finally show up. That in itself is somewhat ridiculous, but what I really found pathetic was the manner in which the book had them show up. The way it was written, it sounded as of the reinforcements simply ambled in to say hello, rather than advancing to help in the battle, as you would expect reinforcements to do. Tank cannons and machine gun fire are not exactly quiet, and even in a war with those sounds around you constantly, soldiers would have some reaction to hearing those sounds from the exact area that they are supposed to reinforce.
Also, the author forgets some of the things he writes and contradicts them later on. For example, as another reviewer mentioned, in one of the first scenes, Miller cuts the backpack straps of a young soldier to keep him from drowning, and the book specifically mentions the pack falling to the bottom while in the water, then a few sentences later Miller is dragging the soldier onto the beach with those same backpack straps.
Despite these problems, the book reads fairly well and is very interesting. It is short and a quick read, yet it does not feel overly rushed.

Overall, this is a book with some noticable problems, but it is still worth reading. The profanity is annoying, but you almost expect it when you read a military novel. Not having seen the movie, I cannot compare the book with it. If you enjoy miltary fiction, then you will probably enjoy this book.

A very good novel. Well worth a taking a look.

I'll have to echo the earlier comments of the readers who caught the glaring error of the 82nd Airborne Division patch versus the 101st Airborne Division patch. The red, white and blue patch of the 82nd, has the white letters of "AA." This stands for "All American," which is the division's name. The black, white and yellow patch of the 101st depicts an American bald eagle. Their Division is known as the "Screamin' Eagles." Once again this is a minor error but not to the personnel who have served and are currently serving in these proud, elite fighting units. I was surprised by that error appearing in a novel associated with a motion picture that went out of it's way to be so realistic. One final error was the description of the engines of the P-51 Mustangs that appear over head near the end of the novel. What made the P-51 one of the most successful piston-engined fighter aircraft in history was the combination of American design mated with a Rolls Royce Merlin engine not a Packard. I may be wrong but I don't think a Packard engine was ever fitted into the P-51 airframe. I believe only a Allison engine was initially tried. These kinds of details would be lost on the unitiated but there are enough of us out there who know the difference. I do like the extra detail the author is able to reveal to the reader. I had seen the movie first and then I read the novel. For me this was the best way to enjoy both the novel and the film. The novel was exciting and fast paced. For me it was hard to put down. It was a graphic and frank account of men in war. What the men in the novel did and said is put before you in a tough, gritty manner. War literally chews up and spits out the young men of our countries. To tell the story any other way without the guts literally spilling out almost on the reader would be a diservice to the men who fought and especially those who died.

About the Author

Maryanne Kearny Datesman is the author of several ESL reading texts. She has taught ESL and administered programs at Western Kentucky University and American University, and she has taught also at Georgetown University. In Kentucky, she established and administered a private language school and directed programs for refugees. She was co-founder of Kentucky TESOL and is a former president of WATESOL.

JoAnn (Jodi) Crandall is a professor of education at the University of Maryland Baltimore County. At UMBC she had co-directed the master's program in ESOL/Bilingual Education and directed the interdisciplinary Ph.D. program in Language, Literacy and Culture. She is a former president of TESOL and AAAL (American Association for Applied Linguistics) and a frequent speaker at national and international conferences.

Edward N. Kearny is professor emeritus of government at Western Kentucky University. He earned his Ph.D. in government from American University in 1968. He also holds a bachelor's degree in economics and a master's degree in psychology, and he has written a number of books and articles on American politics.

very good book

I wish I had bought this book long time ago. It explains where american customs, behaviors, values etc. come from and makes it easy to understand why people here act how they act. Would recomend to everybody who is interested in American culture or wants to visit. For someone who is moving over here it's a must! People here are much different than in Europe (where I come from) and I would have been much less frustrated if I had bought this book earlier. The language used in this book is easy and the more difficult words are explained on the bottom.

American culture from the outside

I used this book recently teaching an advanced ESL class, and I found it as interesting for me as it was for the students. The chapters are organized around a set of principles that, in the authors' view, define American society and culture, and it's written specifically for foreign born residents of the US. Among the subjects treated are religion in the US, American business, the West and the frontier tradition, race, families, the legal system, etc. It was fascinating for me to read along with my students from a fresh perspective. An American might argue with the nuances--is there really a "national religion" of belief in God and patriotism, for example? I'm not sure I'd call it that, but that's only a detail. I can even see this book being used in a high school history course--I thought the explanations of the links between history and culture were fascinating. Highly recommended.
