Good chord book

A small book for guitar chords for my case. It would have been better if it had a spiral binding so it would lay flat but that can be done at any stationary store. All in all it is a good presentation of many chords to practice and use.

This eye-popping coffee table book features a bizarre assemblage of images, ranging from the psychedelic 1970s covers of the now-defunct French pop culture magazine Actuel, to a Life magazine cover from 1944, with Charles de Gaulle in uniform, gazing out above the photographer's lens, to a portrait of a suave-looking Robert Redford on the cover of Rolling Stone in 1980. It's a stirring collection. After a brief history of magazine covers in particular and the press in general, the editors share covers from 28 American and European magazines, picking ones that favor splashy art or provocative photos over headlines and captions. They then analyze trends in graphics, including caricature in Pop Art; hightlight cover themes (such as transportation, propaganda and fashion); and point to people who have set records for the most cover appearances (including Grace Kelly, Hitler and Princess Diana). A history of the world in the last century as described by the front covers of international magazines. Covers are designed to sell magazines, so at any given moment, in any given week or month, the view of the world from the newsagents' racks will tell you much about contemporary obsessions. And as the images on the racks change, as one month's issues replace the last, you can observe changes not just in fashion and media, but in current events and the magazine industry's understanding of its customer base. A fascinating historical document recording the changing self-image of the world in the media mirror from the Russian revolution to the age of global terrorism. Will appeal beyond the specialist market of students of commercial design to anyone who measures the passage of time with issue dates.

I have read reviews of this book in the media suggesting it is a history of the twentieth century through magazine covers. I don't see it like that, rather a visual history in two chapters, of twenty-eight leading consumer magazines from Europe and the USA. The first chapter covers the twenty-eight titles with a good choice of covers and text explaining the history of each one. Playboy and Esquire mix it with Fortune (eleven super designed covers) Stern and Punch for instance.

The second chapter called Trends is the one that I think readers will find the most interesting. It looks at styles and techniques of cover design and finally at people on the front page. Some of these covers could be considered historical as they feature politicians like Churchill, Stalin, Hitler and Charles De Gaulle, or celebrities like Marlene Dietrich, Brigitte Bardot, Marilyn Monroe (shown on a spread with forty-eight) or Sophia Loren.

Magazine folk will enjoy this well designed book because of all the covers. I can recommend another book, 'Cover Story' (ISBN 0811808165) which has two hundred American titles from 1900 to 1950 in a beautifully designed paperback. Perhaps the definitive book on the subject is the sumptuous 'Great Magazine Covers of the World' by Patricia Frantz Kery, out of print but worth looking for because it has five hundred covers from twenty countries, in a word, stunning.

Great book for adults & kids!

This is a great book for adults & kids alike! The size of the book is a little bigger than a 5x7 photo. It has a nice thickness & quality about it. The cover is thicker & doesn't look like it would be damaged easily being bounced around in a book bag. The pages are a thicker quality, and glossy. The photos are amazing quality in the book. We got this book for my daughter's 8th birthday who loved the Smithsonian Nature Guide to Birds, so this is the equivalent for snakes & amphibians. Even though there are large words (genus, class, species etc) in the book, she is able to ask for help on them easily or skip over that section & read the other "blurbs" on the page about the animal. She mostly loves using the index section where she can think of a name of a snake & then find it & search for the page. It is broken out in sections keeping like animals together. There are main pages to each section explaining the differences of say amphibians before reading about the specific frogs themselves. This is a great book that you can read together or they can read independently. Honestly my husband & I end up flipping thru it many times after she goes to bed!

Must Have for Resonance

I did not understand resonance structures at all using other textbooks. After reading this book. I feel like I am a master. I wished all college textbooks were at the caliber of this tiny little book. Klein is an excellent teacher. He gives the straight facts in a way that makes perfect sense and doesn't bore you to death. Understanding resonance is, I think, one of the most important aspects of organic, and you're doomed if you don't. Beware, this book does not replace your textbook or instructor. All of the important equations such as alcohol, alkyne, and ketone synthesis are no where to be found in this book. This book really gives you the fundamentals that you need to understand orgo. That reason alone is enough to get it.

GET THIS BOOK! I'm a current pre-med student at Columbia University and i wanted a book to help me prep for my upcoming Orgo class. Though I haven't finished this book, I can honestly say it is fabulous! I had to stop reading to come and write this review. Klein def. knows his stuff. He breaks it down into PLAIN ENGLISH! And for a student like me who hates the terminology of expensive text books, this is much needed relief. Its like he's talking to directly to you. You almost expect him to call, when you're done with the book, to congratulate and wish you luck in the future. There are many examples, some simple, others tricky and a bit advanced. I truly believe that you (and I) will go into any Organic Chem class and feel very secure about the material. Do yourself a favor and get this book. It concise, compact, and an easy read...A recommended book for you to take while your on that summer vacation!

Get it right meow!

Great book. Organic chemistry is HARD, lots of challenging topics and the class moves very fast.... this book is a lifesaver, I wish I'd gotten it at the beginning of the semester instead of the end when I was trying to review for a final exam. Seriously, it takes all the mumbo-jumbo from your standard textbooks (I had 3) and breaks it down to logical, simple parts. Get it, and save yourself the pain that I experienced! You could not find a more clearly written, straightforward book. Good for review, and to complement your textbook. In fact it should replace your textbook, but no professor is gonna go for that.... How are they going to sound smart, if you understand everything they say??

Wish I had it 30 years ago.

This book holds enormous promise. There are great unseen mysteries of "energy" and "chi" that we Americans associate with Chinese (and sometimes Indian) religious and martial practices. In a sort of optimistic spirit, we might seek out "chi stuff" in our own lives. Most of the time, we just get skunked. We have no luck. We get nowhere. At the most, we might feel some pleasant small tingling of the hands after a whole weekend seminar, and we never get it back again. The author has studied these arts diligently for a long time, and he proposes practical and even simple exercises that anyone can do (even a person of poor flexibility like myself). These do appear to be efficacious toward getting a solid and repeatable experience of these internal energies, natural to the human body. Finding these energies and bringing them into our "life repertoire" couldn't have ill effects and can certainly have good effects. I myself have no wish to beat up anybody. I don't care about martial applications. I do want good health. So, does the book deliver? I think it takes a lot of discipline to do the exercises with the attention and consistency required to make them work. The obstacle isn't a lack of strength or a lack of flexibility, so that they are too difficult for some people to do. That is no obstacle. There is no substantial physical obstacle to this. The "hurdle" is just having the discipline to do it consistently with relaxation and attention. Am I good that way? Yes and no. I do the exercises, sometimes not regularly. I do get rewards from them that are more than any other system I have ever seen or tried---and I've tried a lot. I'm not there yet, but I feel certain that the scraps of experience I have to now will become "the real thing" with enough relaxation and more consistent attention. This appears to be the real thing, and it is very valuable. Usually we question whether a system or method or gadget "will work." In this case, the question is reversed. You have to ask whether the reader will work. If the reader works in a good spirit and with diligence, I think the reward is pretty sure.

Another home run from Scott Meredith. You can't find this information anywhere else unless you are very lucky. It's the little details that Mr. Meredith conveys in these exercises that make the difference between real internal energy developement and just standing around in various postures.

Feel energy like you've never felt before .

I am professional Aikido instructor and Qigong instructor and I have looked at many books on energy and most of them I have found have not been very helpful but Scott's books are different especially if you do the exercises and you do what he says you will start to feel energy like you've never felt it before. I have also done Push Hands with Scott and there's no comparison he has no tension in his body he can throw me like a baby. I had never done push hands in my life until I met Scott and then I tried it with different people who were Tai Chi and Kungfu instructors and I could beat them I have only work with Scott for six months . Just a side note I also had both my hips replaced in the last 18 months and using Scott's principal and Qigong I am the healthiest I've been in 20 years. His finger exercises are also great to do when you're driving. If you are patient and do what he says and keep working on it you will feel energy like you've never felt before.

About the Author
Jack P. Rawlins (Ph.D., Yale University) is Professor of English at the California State University in Chico, where he has taught courses in composition, language education, linguistics, and literature. Writing in the areas of composition pedagogy, Victorian literature, science fiction, and university governance, he has been published by the University of California Press, the Southern Illinois University Press, College English, Studies in English Literature, and Newsweek.

Stephen Metzger has written five guide books (for Avalon Travel Publishing and Globe Pequot Press) and has published articles and essays in a wide range of publications, including skiing, travel, in-flight, and health-and-fitness magazines, as well as the Sunday supplements of several major metropolitan newspapers. He has published poetry and fiction in national and international journals, won awards for his playwriting, and written (and performed in) stage adaptations of stories from James Joyce's DUBLINERS and chapters from ULYSSES. He also a writes a regular food column for a northern California newspaper. He teaches composition and creative writing in the English department at California State University, Chico, and has taught newswriting, magazine writing, and travel writing for the university's journalism department.

Bad Deal

The book description said it came with the access code for the inline material. When I got the book the code did not work. I contacted the seller to se if I could still get the code and they did not even respond. I ended up paying $70 to buy the code online as I needed it asap for my class. Avoind this seller.
