Derek grew up in the Oklahoma City area and earned a B.S. degree in business management from Oklahoma State University. Good tool for anyone, esp if you need financial help

I think this book is a great tool for anyone, even if you have a system that's working for you. It's probably more immediately practical for someone who needs help organizing their finances (although I learned things and I have a budget that works well for me).

If you're in financial crisis, GET THIS BOOK. Here's why I think so:

1. Derek takes the time to explain why his steps are beneficial to you. It's a good balance of explanation and strong suggestions and action. I appreciated how he explained why naming all the dollars of your cash on hand is necessary (and if you don't do it, you might grossly over/under-estimate).

2. So many reviewers have mentioned this, but I also like that he asks us to do the difficult work of self-examination and think about why were are in the situation we're in. One favorite example of that is asking us why there is a difference between the way we ARE spending our money and the way we WANT TO be spending our money. YES! Let's figure it out and own that.

3. Also helpful are his charts. I like to FILL STUFF IN. It makes me feel like I'm making progress. You will have to get on line, look up your bank account, and come to terms with reality. So helpful. If you have debt, you are going to write down ALL THE PAYMENTS and the amounts. You are done just ballparking and guessing (and maybe guessing incorrectly). Reality is our friend.

4. If you are married, you are going to have to go through this material with your spouse. But of course you want to do that - your spouse is spending the money also. I think if this is a source of conflict in marriage that is really beating you down, it would be helpful to get this book and take it to another married couple you respect and trust and ask them to mediate or walk through it with you and your spouse. Even if they were just there for accountability, I think this book makes it easy.

5. If you don't have a budget and want to know how one works and what that would look like for you, the worksheet/chart for the preliminary budget is great. Derek does a good job explaining how it works.

6. Also, it's encouraging. You don't just write down everything you're doing wrong. Derek asks at one point: "What spending category is in sync with your values?" Thanks, Derek, for asking me to find something positive to think about, that I'm already doing or at least thinking correctly, especially when doing something difficult like organizing my finances.

I was also thinking that if you're a parent, it might be useful for your high school senior who's about to leave home or a college senior who's about to get their first adult job and adult paycheck. It's something tangible to go through with them to teach them if you haven't known how to teach them already.

If you're not in financial crisis (like myself), I think this is still useful. Here's why:

1. I learned stuff! I totally went to the website link and read about his garage sale to get quick cash. I totally appreciated his advice on impulse purchases and how to avoid buyers remorse (check out the 24/25 rule). I found ways I can increase the health of my finances. I asked myself some questions about the roots of why parts of managing my finances are still hard for me.

2. I liked the practices Derek suggests in the book. But even better, in my opinion, is that Derek's principles are very solid. He doesn't waiver. He has a bottom line and sticks to it, and it's because he really wants to help you be financially healthy. If you're in good shape, you might read some suggestions for practices that are slightly different. Something might be better than what you're already doing! But you'll at least be reminded why you're doing what you're already doing.

If you need help, get the book. Use it.
If you don't need help, get the book. You might learn something. If you don't use it, keep it on hand to recommend to a friend who needs help.

Great resource for getting back on track financially

Derek Olsen has written a helpful, easy-to-understand guide for getting a handle on your money, getting out of debt, and creating a financial plan for the future. This is an ideal guide for single adults, families with kids at home, or anyone else seeking to get their financial house in order. The book is well-organized and well-written, and certainly worth the investment of time it takes to go through it.

A couple of features set the book apart from others covering similar ground:

1) It's not simply a book to read--it's a workbook with lots of exercises and practical steps to take you through the 4-week process. Derek focuses on the action steps needed, and makes it clear how to proceed from week to week.

2) The book helps you think through why you spend money the way you do. What is the real root of your money difficulties? Derek's book is a fantastic resource for helping you deal with the real issues that govern your use of money.

Anyone who has listened to Dave Ramsey or read his material (or attended Financial Peace University) will find similar principles in Derek's workbook. If you need a refresher course or have gotten off track, Derek's workbook can help. Sometimes it's good to get a little different perspective! If you like Dave Ramsey's material, The Four Week Financial Turnaround is a great companion peace that will put hands and feet on many of the same principles.

One thing I would add is that Derek's principles and ideas are easily adapted to budgeting software. I personally use YNAB software and love it, and would never consider going back to a paper budget again. But whatever system you use, the book will be a big help to get you where you want to go.

A MUST Read & Do Book

I highly recommend this book. I am working through it now and find it a very refreshing way to look at your finances. I am no stranger to these types of books as I am always looking to improve myself. What I think makes this book different is that Derek encourages you to look at your past, but don't stay stuck there, and figure out the "why" of your spending habits. Then he encourages you to celebrate the milestone. So often we stay stuck in the past or beat ourselves up for doing the wrong thing that when we change that habit, we forget to give ourselves a little pat on the back. Then he calls us to set goals and take ACTION steps. I love action! Without it we get nowhere and that is exactly where you will be if you don't give this book a try!

About the Author
Amy Newman specializes in business communication at the Cornell University School of Hotel Administration. As a senior lecturer, she teaches two required communication courses: a freshman business writing and oral communication class and an upper-level persuasive communication class. Newman also teaches a graduate-level management communication course and an elective, Corporate Communication, which focuses on communication strategy, crisis communication, and social media. Newman served an adjunct instructor at Ithaca College; Milano, The New School for Management and Urban Policy in New York City; and eCornell, where she taught classes online. She has won several awards for excellence in teaching and student advising and grants to develop technology-based learning solutions. Prior to joining Cornell, Newman spent 20 years working for large companies, such as Canon, Reuters, Scholastic, and MCI. Internally, she held senior-level management positions in human resources and leadership development. As an external consultant, she worked to improve communication and employee performance in hospitality, technology, education, publishing, financial services, and entertainment companies. A graduate of Cornell University and Milano, Newman is author of several editions of BUSINESS COMMUNICATION: IN PERSON, IN PRINT, ONLINE. She has developed several multimedia company scenarios to accompany the book, has created an interactive tool for managing speech anxiety, and maintains a blog: BizComInTheNews.com. Scot Ober (Ph.D, Ohio State) is a full-time consultant in business communication and document processing. Prior to his consulting career, Dr. Ober was Professor of Business at Ball State University. Another Winner from Betty Neels

Nurse Beth Partridge first meets Professor Alexander van Zeust when she literally runs into him while riding her bicycle. After that, it seems like she keeps bumping into him since he is doing some surgery and consulting at the hospital she works at. Beth enjoys their encounters and she has feelings for him that she can't explain. When Alexander offers Beth the chance to go nurse his sister, Martina, who just had her appendix removed and take care of Martina's four young children, Beth jumps at the chance. She's been feeling a bit restless in her job and is tired of living in a cramped apartment with her brother William. She grew up in the country and misses it. Beth realizes that she may see Alex while taking care of Martina and her children and looks forward to their encounters, although she's not sure why. As for Alex, he's old enough to know what he wants and patient enough to wait for Beth to realize what her true feelings are.

"A Star Looks Down" is another delightful romance from Betty Neels. She used one of her basic plot lines - rich, handsome Dutch doctor falls in love with plain, but feisty, English nurse - and did what she did best with that plot line, create an enjoyable, sweet romance. Beth is a nice heroine - a bit put upon by older step brother Philip who basically took her beloved house in the country away from her and by younger brother William who has a habit of borrowing money from her - but very loving and caring. She's so used to being told that she is plain that she doesn't realize how wonderful her hair and eyes are, which makes her an endearing heroine. Professor Alexander Van Zeust is the kind of hero that only exists in Betty Neels novels - a very talented doctor, very rich, owner of several large and beautifully furnished homes in several countries, in love with Beth and willing to take his time until she realizes she is in love with him. The supporting characters are well written. William is a bit selfish, but harmless unlike Phillip who is a true villain; Alexander's sister Martina is a bit spoiled, but a loving mother; and the children are all sweet and adorable, with Dirk, the oldest, the real standout, as he seems to be a real child, with real feelings and faults. The romance between Beth and Alexander is nicely done, but very old-fashioned. Romance readers who want more than chaste kisses between the hero and heroine, won't find it in a Betty Neels book.

A HELPING HAND AND A KIND HEART - BETH HAD BOTH, BUT WOULD THEY WIN HER LOVE? Professor Alexander van Zeust's sister was ill, and her four young children needed caring for. He asked Beth Partridge - kind, capable, sensible Beth - to take charge of them for a week. She made a splendid job of it, so one week extended to two, and then longer... The professor was happy, the children loved Beth, and their mother knew they were in good hands. Everyone was happy - except Beth. She had fallen in love with her remote employer, but he wasn't likely to be interested in her. She wanted to return to her hospital job, away from all the emotional turmoil, but how when she was needed by the children?

In this "rich good-looking Dutch/British Doctor & plain British Nurse story" Recovery Room Staff Nurse Beth Partridge literally runs into Professor Alexander van Zeust early one morning while trying to report to work on time. They continually meet or are thrown together by chance. An unsuspecting and humble Beth has no idea that "chance" is assisted not by "fate" but by a very patient and determined Alexander. The subtle manner in which he "provides opportunities" to be around her while waiting for her to fall in love with him provides a pleasant, sweet story. To add drama to this story Beth contributes an evil older step-brother and a somewhat selfish younger brother; while Alexander adds a somewhat spoiled sister with a misbehaving, naughty nephew. This is a typical feel-good Betty Neels story that provides a pleasant afternoon read with a few smiles.

As usual this lady delivered another heart warming romance. People love her or hate her, it seems, but her experience and morals shine through each story. They are old fashioned stories and depict a time long gone but are still relevant and enjoyable for this day and age. I have read all her books and will continue to re-read them.l

Behind the scenes view

The best behind-the-scenes account of the NAFTA negotiations. Cameron and Tomlin have meticulously researched and analyzed all aspects of the deal, based on interviews in all three countries. Moreover, the book is written in a readable, entertaining style. The only problem with the book - which is why I dock it one star - is that the theory looks like an add-on. It has little predictive value, despite the authors' claims, and attempts to fuse theories with sometimes conflicting assumptions. Nonetheless, the empirical work is outstanding.

Enter deeply into the contact; breathe by relaxing your abdomen; and after fifteen or twenty seconds, leave the sensation and return to your habitual mode. Doing this thirty, forty or fifty times a day allows us to enter into a deep acquaintance with sensation.”

With a nod to Aldous Huxley, whose book Doors of Perception laid the groundwork for the psychedelic and sexual revolutions, Odier’s aim is nothing short of total human liberation. Still, he is realistic about the power that habit and our ingrained ways of operating in the world has over us. To counter them, he offers up some mischievous advice--like this,

“There is something suspect about our adoration of harmony. One of the things I fantasize about is replacing the Buddha on my altar with one of Caesar. The harmony of the Buddha puts us to sleep and makes us soft, but the chaos of Caesar can wake us up. Every morning before this altar we would abandon harmony in favor of the infinite possibilities that chaos represents.”

About the Author
Daniel Odier was born in Geneva in 1945. He is best-known as the author of a Lolita-esque series of novels published in France under the pseudonym Delacorta. His book of sexual mysticism, Tantric Quest, was an international bestseller. For several years he taught screenwriting at the University of Oklahoma at Tulsa. The author lives in France.

Delight upon delight

I was delighted to learn of Odier's The Doors of Joy, since his earlier book, Tantric Quest, remains one of my favorites; in the top five of all the books I own. Doors of Joy is pithy wisdom obviously distilled from years of spiritual practice and a honed writer's ability to do away with the non-essential, leaving the reader with the gift of bite size morsels that refresh, nurture and delight the imagination. What a gift these meditations are! I feel joyous each time I read this book, and not much more needs to be read at a sitting than a page of two to infect me with a renewed trust in spontaneity and allowance of my playful, creative, authentic nature. Warning: this book will certainly encourage you to take risks with yourself that you probably haven't trusted in a long, long time. Len Worley, PhD, Austin, TX

Much below expectations

I was very much looking forward for this book.

The introduction claims that the book is not your regular treatease about biometrics. But unfortunately, it is. Lots of defocused basic information totally lacking thought leadership and direction, all written by a non-technical author. Maybe it's good for a legal council just starting a job in the biometric industry, but way too simplistic for business or technical people. Very few real-life examples, and no technical depth. Many ideas on the privacy represent the thinking prevalent several years ago, while they recently morphed into something different.

On the positive side, the book is clearly written and would not be a waste of time of any practitioner in the industry to browse through.
