disappointing, does not deliver on its claims. NOT recommended

This recently published book claims to aid in clinical management of patients with GI disorders. I reviewed every chapter of it. I have to say it was very disappointing.
It seems to be addressed to medical students or residents who want to improve their general GI knowledge, but do not directly manage patients themselves. It does not add much to the Gi fellow or practicing gastroenterologist.
It brushes over many of the GI content without providing clear management answers (for e.g. : treatment of hepatitis B, C : mentions antivirals without clear indications, dosing, follow up, end points, side effects.) There are many other examples of this problem with this book.
It claims to provide "high yield" clinical practice points, yet these points are straight forward concepts known to anyone who is not even gastroenterologist (e.g. CT scan is useful in staging pancreatic cancer. Barium swallow is an important test for esophageal disorders. NSAIDS and H. pylori are major causes of peptic ulcers)
another example: the key practice point for chronic pancreatitis:
amylase and lipase maybe a bit elevated , but marked elevation is unusual (how does this info help me clinically with my patients?)
It is published in 2013, yet misses many important concepts of GI (serrated polyps, gastric polyps, achalasia subtypes, manometry pictures, new achalasia and gerd treatments, new antidiarrheal and constipation meds)and mentions outdated treatments that are not recommended by guidelines anymore (ssri for dyspepsia, botox for gastroparesis). I noted more than 50 such examples, beyond the scope of this review.

It may be a good book for medical students , however its outdated and missing information is concerning, and I would not recommend it to any medical professional.

An incomplete handbook for a gastroenterologist

I am really surprised at how incomplete this handbook is. I bought this book as a refresher review for general GI. It is well organized, but lacks details in every aspect. The treatment recommendations are specially short and do not provide enough details for a busy practitioner, It might be a good book for a non-gastroenterologist or a medical student, but I would not recommend it for a GI specialist.

Receiving this new book from Amazon.ca (Canada) on Friday, September 18, I have almost read through all the four chapters and the translator's introduction today, September 22.

This translation by Ethan Mark of the 1987 Japanese original by Yoshimi Yoshiaki (surname first) should help dispel or even debunk the usual view, held even by some Chinese, that the Sino-Japanese War 1931/1937 and the broadened Asia-Pacific War of 1941-1945 was the product of a handful of militarist Japanese generals and politicians. Actually it was a total war fought wholeheartedly by the soldiers in the battlefields and supported fully and voluntarily by the people of Japan, female and male, old and young. For China, it was a total war involving all of her combatants and civilians; for Japan, it was at the same level and of the same calibre.

Chapter 4, "Democracy from the Battlefield", is particularly illuminating. The present trend of historical revisionism in Japan may be understood better through reading these pages. This trend has its roots right after the war, as I see it.

What is amazing is that the common Japanese soldiers and common people could write so eagerly in the form of diaries and letters. Comparatively, China's soldiers (excluding officers) of the time were not as literate since many of them were actually illiterate (Cf. "The Battle for China" (Stanford University Press, 2011), page 102). (This high rate of illiteracy was probably not due to the so-called "difficulty" of writing Chinese characters. It is probably due to the lack of general education in China. Japan at the time was probably using more Chinese characters (kanji, in the full form) than now. Even now, Japan still places emphasis on calligraphy, and vertical text is still evident in her many publications.) Chinese army officers did keep many battle diaries, as I subsequently learnt from a quick reading of some pages of the book "Writing War: Soldiers Record the Japanese Empire" (2013) by Aaron Moore.

I rarely found a hint of, or allusion to, any question of justness, moral rightness or ethical doubt regarding the waging of this aggressive invasion of the mainland in any of the letters, diaries or survey results quoted in the book. An exception may be the case on pages 194-200; but that happened in 1944, towards the defeat of Japan by the USA.

This is an important book that should have come sooner after the original came out. It is exceedingly informative and it reshapes one's thinking. But it is good that the book came this year which marks the 70th anniversary of the ending of the two wars.

Love to hear Joan Hickson's voice!

The only reason I give this 4 stars instead of 5 is the same exact reason I love Joan Hickson's voice: her voice and speech are so particular to her. Because she has such a quickly identifiable voice, I sometimes find it difficult to follow who is talking while she is reading. She sounds like Miss Marple the whole time and I haven't yet gotten used to "Miss Marple" reading other people's lines. But I've only listened to one of the stories so far: The Blue Geranium, so maybe I'll develop a better ear as I get farther along. I intend to listen to them all and I'm sure I'll enjoy them, but it isn't a book on tape that you can listen to while you're driving, or you'll end up in Toledo - it's good for listening while hand sewing or embroidering or something that doesn't require any thought (so you can focus wholly on that wonderful voice and the story.) I hope you enjoy! I am!

My least favorite from Agatha Christie. Thay may be becuase it's several short stories. There isn't enough space to develop the characters and events as in a longer book.

Some people only want to see their bat-god be victorious and easily triumph over everything

Not everyone is a fan of seeing Batman fall. Some people only want to see their bat-god be victorious and easily triumph over everything. But if you like to see Batman humanized a bit, and want to see the greatest example of him getting taken down and then getting back up again even stronger, than I highly recommend this book. Also, it's pretty rare to find a Jason Todd as Robin story, so that's nice.

Jason Todd's finest hour

The very late `80s was a time of big changes for Batman. Not only was the caped crusader's image and tone forever altered by Tim Burton's Batman movie, but he lost his sidekick Jason Todd (aka Robin) in a particularly grisly way. Before taking on Robin's demise, Jim Starlin wrote a 4-issue prestige format miniseries titled BATMAN: THE CULT, which took some narrative cues from Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns and paved the way for other chaotic tales set in Gotham City, such as Contagion and No Man's Land.

Starlin's story, while full of drama and action, is a bit too over-the-top for even this accepting comic fan to stomach, and it is perhaps the weirdest of the weird Batman stories. I've read all kinds of Batman tales, from golden age craziness to Elseworlds, but this one takes the cake. The Reverend Deacon Blackfire (don't laugh) is purging Gotham of its criminal element once and for all by rallying the homeless to his cause, drugging and brainwashing them, and getting them riled up to murder all the criminals, plus the politicians and police who would dare to get in the way. Batman is captured by Blackfire's goons, given the drug/brainwash treatment, and serves as a rank-and-file goon himself. And even then, with the situation getting so dire that Gotham City becomes first a war zone, and then a disaster area, the media is ambivalent to the situation, and regular citizens seem to feel that the Rev is doing a great job! Errr... yeah. Anyway, Batman must battle both the Rev's minions and his own brainwashing, which is affecting him with instability and paralyzing hallucinations. But that's okay, because who should arrive to pick up the caped crusader's slack and get him back in the action, but Jason Todd! That's right, the Robin that fans deemed worthless and had Jim Starlin later kill off in A Death in the Family is, in THE CULT, a hardcore fighter who saves the mostly-worthless Batman's tail numerous times. It really impressed me, to the point that I seriously wondered why any true fan would have wanted the kid dead.

Bernie Wrightson's pencils provide just the right atmosphere for this kind of story. If you've ever seen his work for Stephen King's The Stand, you know that Wrightson is the perfect artist to depict not only a ruined Gotham City, but a Batman fighting to stay sane. Unfortunately, Wrightson's pencils are almost completely obscured by Bill Wray's sloppy coloring. Muted watercolors with no contrast, and spattered backgrounds that make no sense... it's certainly in the running for the worst coloring job ever in a comic book. DC definitely needs to release a re-colored printing of this trade paperback, and to heck with Wray if he gets his feelings hurt. Sure, it's a dark story, but that's no reason to ruin Wrightson's detailed work.

So, it squeaks by with three out of five stars, but a recolored version of BATMAN: THE CULT would rate a solid 4, at least.

A harrowing 80s tale from the Dark Knight. When the enigmatic Deacon Blackfire moves into Gotham with an eye on the poor and downcast, the Caped Crusader is but one of many to wish the "good" Deacon success. But Frost's motives prove far from altruistic, and when he shows his true colors even Batman cannot escape his sadistic grasp. Foreshadows some of the basic story elements from "Knightfall" and "No Man's Land," but Jim Starlin's tight, moving script is a far cry from many of the overblown, maze-like plots of today. The inner conflict Starlin's "broken" Batman must overcome is handled adroitley, and Berni Wrightson's visual depiction of the Dark Night Detective is quite powerful as well. Jason Todd is still Robin in this story, and Batman can't make it without him. The Deacon himself is the kind of wolf-in-the-fold that we see everyday on TV and in the newspaper--and sometimes even in our pulpits--a false prophet whose own Messiah Complex makes him capable of feats even a Bin Laden might applaud. It's going to take everything Batman has to bring him down, and the over-the-top climax does not disappoint. Out of print, but look for it in your comic shop's back-issue section (it was originally published as a 4-issue mini-series) or order it used from Amazon and add it to your own Batcave today.

CHAPTER ONE

It was love at first sight and I was astonished that it should be happening to me because the first sight had nothing in the least alluring about it. The roads from airports to cities rarely do. I was like a man who bewilders his friends by becoming infatuated with a particularly unprepossessing woman-warts and a squint and a harelip. 'What on earth does he see in her?' I've often wondered myself. What did I see in that dreary road which was taking me to Paris?

This sudden incomprehensible love affair might have been a little less mysterious if I had arrived in France with gooseflesh anticipations of romantic garrets and dangerous liaisons in them, the Latin Quarter and champagne at five francs a bottle, and artists' studios-all the preposterous sentimental paraphernalia from absinthe to midinettes. But I had not included any of these notions in my meagre luggage, I had no preliminary yearnings towards the country. Rather the contrary. In Australia I had spent much of my time with a young woman who had visited France just before the war and had gone down with a bad attack of what someone called 'French flu'. She babbled so fervently and persistently about France and Paris that she infected me with a perverse loathing for both.

The fact nonetheless inexplicably remains. A hundred yards from the airport we passed a café ('Le Looping', with the two o's aerobatically askew to make the point clear) and puppy love overwhelmed me-puppy love from which this old dog has not yet shaken himself free. 'Le Looping' and the handful of unremarkable customers sipping their drinks on the terrace instantaneously bewitched me.

I knew, with no rational justification, that I was in a country which for me was unlike any other country. It was as though some indigenous evangelist had caused me to be 'born again'.

One life abruptly ended and another began. There and then I shed my twenty-five years. To this day, in my own head and heart I am twenty-five years younger than the miserable reality.

The passengers in the airport bus were a drab lot. It was only eighteen months since the war had ended. There had not been much time to spruce up. In my besotted state, they seemed to me as fabulous as troubadours. The houses along the road were dismal little pavilions badly in need of a coat of paint. I gaped at them as if each one were the Chateau de Versailles. And in the distance the Eiffel Tower looked so impossibly like itself as depicted on a thousand postcards and a thousand amateur paintings that the sense of unreality which I had been feeling deepened still further.

What had brought me to Paris was my eagerness to visit a writer I had admired since my school days. He and his wife were to become two of my closest friends. We saw a great deal of each other in the years ahead-in Paris, in the South of France, in the Loire Valley. Of all the countless occasions on which we laughed together, argued, drank wine, loafed on a Mediterranean beach, listened to music, none was as sheerly magical as that first evening in Paris.

Our relationship took shape from the very beginning. We were already friends by the time we left their studio and strolled together down the Boulevard de Montparnasse. For some reason, twilight in Parts, then at least, was not like twilight in any other city. It enveloped you in a wonderful blue and golden luminosity and it had its own special unidentifiable perfume. That one-and-only twilight dreamily descending on us was so unlike anything I had known that I had my first vague glimpse of a mystery which was to become more and more apparent as time went by: Parts was the city of the unexpected. You always felt as though something extraordinary were about to happen. Sometimes it did, sometimes not; but the expectation never diminished. One went on waiting.

Twilight aside, most things were in short supply in 1947. Fortunately, the writer had been familiar with Paris for thirty years or more. He was already on the right sort of terms with the proprietor of an unassuming restaurant in one of the side streets. So we were served with a mixture of raw vegetables, a sorrel omelette (I can still recall the metallic taste of that sorrel) and, thanks to the proprietor's peasant brother, some wild duck. The wine was a muscular red with a powerful rasp to it but (a symptom of French flu?) I thought I had never drunk anything so delicious. It was served in cups as if we were in the prohibition speakeasy era because otherwise less privileged customers would have been clamouring for some and there wasn't any too much to be had.

Afterwards we walked back along the boulevard towards the studio. We stopped midway for a glass of brandy at the Dôme. Tourists had not yet ventured to return to Paris. The other customers on the terrace were all French, completely nondescript but fascinating because they were French. There were practically no cars on the roads. Those there were either had great charcoal-burning furnaces fixed to the back or carried dirigible-like bags of gas on their roofs. Every so often a fiacre went clip-clopping past. The air was almost startling pure. The stars were sharply visible in a translucent sky. I turned to the man at the next table and asked him for a light-speaking French for the first time in my life. I managed to make three ludicrous grammatical blunders in the course of that one short sentence. If he was amused by my linguistic ineptitude he was too polite to show it. La politesse francaise-that still existed, too.

BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU PRAY FOR

Miguel at 12 desperately wants to take his place among the Menfolk of his family, by proving to his father that he is mature enough to be one of the regular hands. For years he has dreamed of accompanying the Chavez men on their annual summer trek up into the Sangre de Cristo Mountains with their large flock of sheep. Despite his zeal, creativity and real help with the family business, Miguel seems condemned to spend yet another summer at home with the girls.
When the entire village near Taos, New Mexico, turns out to celebrate the feast day of San Ysidro, their local patron, Miguel decides to petition the saint in a touchingly humorous (almost letter like) prayer. He takes it for granted that his wish will be granted, but soon is shocked to discover the harsh conditions. He never meant for his beloved brother, Gabriel, to have to leave home for two years in the military. Is there any way he can take back his wish? This leads to a long, soul-searching discussion on the
efficacy of prayer, the power and limitations of saints, and great fraternal quality time.
This story will apppeal more to boys seeking macho experience, for the role of females is relegated to the superficial. Still the book provides warm, family interactions. Narrated in the first person by Miguel himself, the book reveals the coming-of-age struggle and dreams of a Mexican-American youth. Readers will discover wry humor, simple faith, bi-lingual slang, and uneven pacing. Krumgold indulges in great detail about the sheep raising business, as Miguel blunders his way into adulthood. Wonderful descriptions of the mountains which have been calling him for years.

Slow At First, Then Valuable and Thought Provoking

As an adult who has read numerous children's books both on my own and as read-alouds, I was for some time confused as to why this book had garnered a Newbery Medal. I hung in there and was at least a third of the way through the book before I started to understand its' value. I kept thinking that my own boys would have liked this as a read-aloud when they were in perhaps grades 2-5, maybe even 1-5. I think younger boys would identify with the way that Miguel talks about himself and looks at the world.

As it progressed I really enjoyed Miguel's brushes with adulthood and progression in the family's sheep farming operation. His talk with his older brother Gabriel toward the end of the book was just the kind of thing a grade school boy could understand. Here was 12 year old Miguel trying to make sense of how and why things happen in life. The book could easily have ended here. Instead it went on to his journey into the mountains for the sheep's summer pasturing.

I do think this book is best read-aloud or read by a thoughtful child. It would likely provoke much discussion of life issues when read-aloud. It has an odd juxtaposition of young-ness and older philosophical thinking. Also, in some ways it reads like a documentary, a genre in which the author did much work. The story moves at a very leisurely pace and this will be off-putting for many readers today. I think it is really more of an "art book" in the same way that some films are "art films". Art films are not going to appeal to all audiences and neither will Miguel's story. It will, however, be a satisfying read for many.

This book would likely be a bestseller today if the story were "tightened up", in other words shortened and edited in some ways. This book has a Roman Catholic backdrop due to the time period and location.
