This book appearance is a logical development of the research activity in a relatively new field named Plasma Assisted Combustion (PAC) and is the first attempt to collect the most valuable contributions to the field from different research groups all over the globe. The first practical applications of different plasma sources for ignition and combustion enhancement date back to the 1960s and 1970s. The first PAC conference was organized by the Editor in 1989 in the former Soviet Union. At this time, the PAC community is relatively well organized with an annual International Workshop and Exhibition on Plasma Assisted Combustion (IWEPAC), now converted into the International Conference on Plasma Assisted Technologies or ICPAT starting in 2012, and special issues in the IEEE Transactions on Plasma Science on the topic of on Plasma Assisted Combustion. This two-volume work is one of the first projects of the newly established International Plasma Technology Center (IPTC) intended to provide, in Volume 1, a description of different plasma sources especially designed for PAC and, in Volume 2, to describe PAC processes that are under development or used industrially. If successful, we plan to publish new editions every two-three years depending on progress in this field. The basic mission of the IPTC is to promote scientific, educational, and charitable activities. This book is an example of organizing an international team of authors to promote education in the focus areas of the disciplines addressed. There are over 30 authors for Volume 1, who hail from five countries: Czech Republic, Netherlands, Russia, Ukraine, and the United States. A second volume will be produced in the future. The IPTC will gratefully welcome new authors in this endeavor to aid our mission of keeping abreast of new developments in the field of plasma assisted combustion, gasification, and pollution control and to update the literature to include new information through additional or revised volu

About the Author
Dr. Igor Matveev, the Chief Editor of this book, is a world recognized leader in Plasma Assisted Combustion, having over 1,200 plasma systems developed under his supervision in operation worldwide. In 1996 he was awarded the title "Citizen of the Year" in his native city Nikolaev. From 2000 to 2002 he served as an international consultant for the UN Economic Commission for Europe in energy and water conservation. Since 2004 Dr. Matveev has been a guest editor for the IEEE Transactions on Plasma Science Plasma Assisted Combustion special issue and the organization committee chair for the 2nd to 8th International Conference on Plasma Assisted Technologies (ICPAT).

Plasma Assisted Combustion, Gasification, and Pollution Control, Volume I review

The book Plasma Assisted Combustion, Gasification, and Pollution Control, Volume I fills a gap that has existed in a rapidly developing field. In one place, it covers a very broad range of worthwhile topics in considerable detail, including both the underlying physics and the practical aspects. It deals with the challenges in the field and the successes achieved. It also contains an extensive set of references should a reader want greater detail. From these aspects, the book is definitely worthy of a positive review. There are however some aspects of the book that really should have been cleaned up before it was published. While not seriously impacting the real information that the book successfully provides, a thorough proofreading could easily have removed its major distractions including: a number of figures of very poor resolution; quite a few errors in the labeling of figures, equations, and tables; a missing equation and figure; and many captions missing from the figures in one of chapters. The frequency of these issues goes far beyond the occasional typos that always seem to sneak through.
In spite of these shortcomings, the book is very definitely worthwhile and provides a valuable resource for both students and workers in the field of Plasma Assisted Combustion.
The book consists of an Introduction followed by 6 additional chapters covering the fundamentals of plasma-based technologies. The chapters have different authors, all experts in their sub-specialties. In the following, comments are given on each of the chapters.
Introduction. Plasma Assisted Combustion History, Applications, and Classification of Systems (Louis A. Rosocha and Igor B. Matveev)
The introduction provides a very nice, quick overview of the variety of plasma devices currently in use or under development and their employment in the area of Plasma Assisted Combustion (PAC). The chapter provides extensive references to the systems, which is good to see.
The one thing that I found missing from the Introduction is a few hard numbers on the advantages of the current plasma technologies over the conventional technologies that they hope to replace. This addition would really help motivate the reader. Additionally, some hard numbers on what other improvements one might expect in the future over today's plasma technologies should be included. While these clearly cannot be extensive lists, a few real hard numbers are definitely needed.
Chapter 1. Atmospheric-Pressure Low-Current Discharges in Gas Flows (Yury D. Korolev)
This is a very nice and thorough chapter covering the topic of its title. Aside from the problem of a number of poor quality photographs, the strength of the chapter is that it strongly links theoretical explanations with experimental results. In fact, considerable detail is given in the explanation of the experimental results, which is good to see. A bit more attention could have been placed on the actual successful application of the plasma techniques, in particular emphasizing the advantages that they provide over non-plasma approaches.
Chapter 2. DC Plasma Torches (Igor B. Matveev, Sergey I. Serbin, Milan Hrabovsky, Vladimir E. Messerle, Alexander B. Ustimenko, Evgeni I. Karpenko, Valeri G. Lukyashchenko, Valeri Zh. Ushanov, Arcady M. Ilyin)
This chapter's section on low power DC plasma torches (which are here primarily discussed from the point of view of jet engine applications) has a lot of experimental and practical results, which are very useful. The section would have benefited from a summary emphasizing the most important results and what direction future work and results are likely to take.
The chapter's next section on DC torches with arc stabilization by liquids is very well presented. These are clearly interesting devices and provide a way to address a number of the challenges raised in the previous section especially for plasma generators of higher output power and temperature. The description of the devices is quite thorough although a bit more practical information such as cathode lifetime, and continuous operation limits would have been useful.
The chapter's final section on Long life DC arc plasmatron with nanocarbon coating of electrodes discusses another interesting concept and method to substantially improve (currently a factor of 2) the lifetime of higher power plasmatrons, but given their short initial lifetime (500 hr), perhaps not all that important. What is missing from the section is a discussion of the direction that work needs to take in order to increase the current factor of 2 lifetime extension to the effectively infinite lifetime that is hypothesized.
Chapter 3. Electron-beam and non-self-maintained driven plasmas for PAC
(Nikolay V. Ardelyan, Vladimir L. Bychkov, Dmitry V. Bychkov, Konstantin V. Kosmachevskii)
Overall, this chapter is extremely rich in information and looks at many of the aspects of plasmas induced by electron beams in considerable detail, both with and without the presence of an additional electric field. These aspects are examined both from a theoretical/modeling point of view, as well as from an experimental perspective. This is extremely worthwhile.
One problem this chapter suffers from is a large number of errors with regard to figure, equation, and table numbers.
An unfortunate consequence of the chapter's length and level of detail is that at times it is a bit problematic to keep track of all the points raised and which ones are in fact key. This problem is somewhat further aggravated by a lack of a discussion of the practical aspects of various improvements that that the authors were able to find for a number of parameters with regard to real applications. For instance, from an application point of view, what performance enhancement does a decrease in the ignition time, or change in the maximum combustion temperature achieved actually make in practical terms? Some hard numbers should be provided.
In spite of a disregard of these practical aspects, the chapter does provide an abundance of very useful information and reference values, all in one place.
Chapter 4. High Frequency Induction Plasma Torches (Sergey V. Dresvin, Dmitry V. Ivanov, Sergey G. Zverev, Igor B. Matveev)
Section 4.1 ICP plasma torch design features
This section provides a nice and useful summary of the basics of high frequency Inductively Coupled Plasma torches. It covers a history of their development, issues associated with their design, and approaches for an implementation of solutions. A practical general discussion is also given of the properties of a variety of such plasma torches currently in existence. In a few places the text could be cleaned up a bit to read a bit more smoothly, but this does not distract much from the useful information presented.
Section 4.2 Modeling of the processes describing plasma behavior in the torches
As indicated by its title, this section discusses the modeling of high frequency induction plasma torches. Refreshingly, it does this from the ground up, starting with the underlying basic physics and providing a step-by-step progression to the final set of equations relevant to the modeling of the torches in question. The discussion is thorough and explains and justifies the simplifications/approximations made in the process. Standard solvers are then used to find consistent solutions to the final set of coupled differential equations which are then applied for specific geometries, cases, and operating conditions. Finally, the results are presented. While references are given for the results of experimental investigations of the characteristics of operating high frequency industrial torches, unfortunately these experimental results are not directly compared to the model results in the current work. Given that this book is supposed to be an overview of a general nature and a textbook, this omission is disappointing. Regardless of this omission and several rough patches in the text, this section provides a much-needed basic overview.
Chapter 5. High Frequency Capacitive or Flame Torches (Victor A. Vlasov, Yuriy Y. Lutsenko, Alexander G. Karengin)
This chapter begins with a nice basic and general overview of these types of plasma torches. It provides both experimental and theoretical insight into their operation and performance. As with the earlier chapters, an extensive list of references is provided for more detailed information on specific work/results. Unfortunately there are numerous distractions from the information that is being presented which diminishes the chapter's effectiveness. Many of the figures are missing captions (other than figure number) although they are at least in part explained in the chapter text. The resolution of quite a few of the figures is also very poor making it difficult to understand what is being presented in those cases. There is also a long subsection on modeling results that makes predictions of many of the characteristics of how the studied torches are supposed to perform, but again there is a complete lack of a direct comparison with actual experimental performance values.
Chapter 6. Matching Pulsed Power to Processing (E.J.M. van Heesch, K. Yan, A.J.M. Pemen, G.J.J. Winands, P.P.M. Blom, H.W.M. Smulders, Z. Liu, F.J.C.M. Beckers, W.F.L.M. Hoeben, T. Huiskamp, J. Zhang, S.J. Voeten, P.C.T. van der Laan)
This chapter deals with the basic practical aspects of using plasma systems in industrial applications, something that is often difficult to find. It is really nice to see it in this book. This includes theoretical and practical aspects of matching the power supplies to the plasma generators. Furthermore the chapter contains a broad investigation of the overall system efficiency as a function of a variety of system parameters.

An excellent and long-awaited book filling the gap between the theory of plasma physics and practical applications of small and large plasma systems. The Introduction (History, Applications, and Classification) by Rosocha and Matveev is, perhaps, the first concise but well illustrated and accessible overview of diverse plasma systems tested and used in the combustion as well as non-combustion applications. This is followed-up by an in-depth chapter on the atmospheric-pressure low-current discharges in gases, featuring numerous plasma cookbook examples. The importance of such low-cost systems for the present and future technology developments should not be overlooked by engineers, students, young and old science enthusiasts, and entrepreneurs alike. That's because in the past, plasma technology was frequently associated with the tokamaks of the world operated by not always transparent organizations. Yet, the atmospheric-pressure, low-current plasma systems can be available to all at a reasonable, low cost. The IT analogy will be the move from the mainframes occupying basements to the desktop computing, a change that unleashed an avalanche of innovations and new products. Another analogy is the coming revolution in the manufacturing by increasingly popular, low-cost 3D printers. The further book chapters are a mine of valuable plasma references, all spread over the 500-page plus volume. What may be worth suggesting for the future revisions of this book, or the announced volume 2, is dedication of more pages to the increasingly popular corona treatments of surfaces and somewhat less to the electron beam technologies. The scope and applicability of this publication goes well beyond the plasma assisted combustion or gasification, and to give it justice it deserves, the future title should be less modest, perhaps something like `low-cost, atmospheric-pressure plasma systems for all'? Having said that, I wholeheartedly recommend this book to everyone with a passion for technology and innovation, SBIR investigators, academic and corporate researchers, business development technologists, as well as all technical libraries.
