Not just the best Chinese cookbook. One of the best cookbooks ever.

I've had The Key to Chinese Cooking for 27 years; it was one of the first 5 cookbooks in my collection. I now own somewhere around 300 cookbooks, but this is still among the best.

Kuo got everything right. In an era when no one had heard of dim sum or regional Chinese cuisine, she included long sections about ingredients, techniques (including improvisations when you lack authentic equipment), and cooking styles. Every technique introduced includes introductory recipes, such as steamed lemon chicken in the steaming section. There are also lots and LOTS of recipes for every conceivable category, and it probably goes without saying that they're uniformly excellent. The book falls open to spicy pork with peanuts; hot and sour soup; tangerine peel chicken; shrimp fried rice.

But what sets this apart is the writing and instructional style. Kuo has become my touchstone for friendly, technical writing. She knows the reader hasn't deep-fried a duck before, so she gives careful detailed steps that somehow manage to both reassure you and keep you moving. It's never too much information, making you feel as though a task is daunting. I was lucky to find this book when I still a cooking beginner, because I credit the author with making me unafraid to try new recipes and techniques.

My only criticism is that her estimates of serving portions are unreliable. Sometimes she'll say that a recipe serves 4, when served with rice, and we get just a meal for two. That's the case for one of our favorites, chicken in black bean sauce. (I must have a dozen such recipes. This is the one I use.)

Overall though - this is one of my favorite cookbooks. Highly recommended.

I taught a Chinese friend - in China - to cook with this book

I lived in China eleven years; studied Chinese there and taught English. I love cooking and love Chinese food, but was dismayed that after years of attempting to copy my friends' cooking there, the results were barely remotely the same. (They don't use measuring spoons there, and few of my friends had a gift of teaching.) Finally I remembered this cookbook that my mother fell in love with and had given as a gift to each of her daughters, and on a trip home for the summer, dug mine out of my attic boxes, and brought it back to China so I could learn to cook!

Result: I did, and my friends there finally began to enjoy and even compliment my Chinese cooking. And one friend whose mother never taught her to cook learned staying weekends at my apartment, reading the cookbook (she was an English major), and then following the clear directions. I gave her a copy for her wedding present. She is now a good cook, too!

The thing of the book is, Irene Kuo is a gifted teacher, and a very good writer to boot. If you like cookbooks, you could read this one just for sheer enjoyment. She presents, then totally demystifies key concepts that I had suspected I was missing but couldn't guess at. She gives you confidence. And yes, the recipes are very authentic, though they don't cover every region's cooking. It's so helpful that she lists the ingredients with their Chinese names, though in China these names can vary a tiny bit regionally, and so I'm thinking they may in the States, too (I still live abroad.)

This is the best chinese cookbook you will ever see.

My husband is from China, he tells me I cook like his mother now. The copy I have is old and broken I've used it so much. I was hoping to get another copy. It's a great cookbook. Cooking techniques and recipes are explained in depth. There is also a glossary of ingredients so you can figure out what something is and where to buy it.

It takes a strong stomach to read the detailed accounts here of emergency accidents and crime-victim cases and some of the operations performed by Rainer, chief of surgery at the East Alabama Medical Center. A practitioner of the risk-filled specialty of neurosurgery, the author recalls his years of schooling and brain-numbing, marriage-wrecking internship and residency schedules. Along with discussing his professional satisfactions, he writes with candor about his mistakes, about the inadequacy of certain medical practices (such as burn treatments), and the misdiagnoses and impersonal care of patients that he witnessed in a veteran's hospital. This autobiographical account of the making of a neurosurgeon shows us the world of a man so consumed by his profession that no room is left for wife or children. The total dedication of self to the service of others at the expense of one's family seems a tragic choice to make; it is unfortunate that the surgeon must miss so much in life in order to save others. Dr. Rainer's tales of his successes and failures in the treatment of patientsfrom his first fumblings as a medical student to his days in private practiceare well done. He also covers his problems with medical malpractice and expulsion from his group practice. An excellent medical autobiography, recommended for most health collections. Becoming a "brain surgeon" - gruelling

Almost 30 years ago, Dr Rainer entered the medical profession as a highly trained, but extremely green and inexperienced intern. In 1987, he produced this account of his growth from new boy to neurosurgeon.

Doctors were thrown in at the deep end and - armed with libraries' worth of knowledge - were challenged to learn on the job. They would either sink or swim: taking their patients with them. Whilst the have-a-go culture is curtailed by modern expectations and medico-lawyers, the notion of "practising" medicine is no accident. Rainer and his colleagues learned their procedures on the dead, the dying and the uninsured of the hospital. Rainer vividly describes, with another new boy, putting in a first subclavian line (a big needle into the blood vessels behind the front wall of the chest) unsupervised. This was very rapidly followed by the first chest drain, when the patient's lung was punctured and collapsed.

Rainer lived, ate and slept neurosurgery. Well, lived neurosurgery. Eating and sleeping were luxuries not afforded to a trainee. It seems that training involved a continuous cycle of operating, rounding, seeing emergency cases and just a couple of hours of snatched sleep before starting over again. Like the tale told in The Intern Blues, doctors learned by doing and doing and doing. Until they could almost literally perform a procedure in their sleep. Asked, "You're not going to do my patient tired are you doctor?", Rainer replied if he didn't, he'd never operate.

For Rainer and his cohort, training and operating came first, second and third; survival fourth; family were left with the scraps. It was no surprise when marriages broke down and surgeons became married to their work. It is no surprise that Rainer, after several intense years a competent operator and good doctor, left the medical profession.

One of the best books I've ever read.

Having a keen interest in medical subjects, I bought this book at a discount book store to read. From almost the first page, I was entranced. I have since read this book at least four times (probably more). This book is the journey of a man with a total love of the practice of medicine. He tells of the grueling hours spent as an intern and as a resident, not so you will feel sorry for him, but rather to point out how medicine was his first love, many times to the detriment of the other things in his life.
Some of the stories he recounts are absolutely hillarious, others heartwrenching. The best recommendation I can give is that I have loaned it to several people and they each have given it highest acclaim. Dr. Rainer puts a tremendous amount of himself in this book, telling not only of his experiences in medicine, but also painting what is obviously a self-poitrait, warts and all.
I have spoken to Dr. Rainer in order to get my copy autographed, and he is now a malpractice attorney. If you read the book you'll understand why I mention this. Read this, you will not regret it.

After several years, I keep coming back to this book...

I first read an abridged version of "First Do No Harm" in a copy of Reader's Digest when I was around 10 or 12 years old. After that, I sought out and found this book in my local library. Dr. Ranier's writing is honest and straightforward...He doesn't glamourize or sugar-coat medicine or the sacrifices one makes on the path to becoming an M.D. He also reflects fondly on certain life-changing encounters with patients that I myself remember and think about. Dr. Ranier practices about 40 miles from me and I'd love to meet him and thank him for this book which has not only been an important part of my library for many years now, but also turned me toward the medical profession. Outstanding!

The beginning of a very good writer....

I happen to be a "true-blue" Deveraux fan. This book probably in it's day was excellent. It reminds me of the "Judith Michael" books or perhaps "Janet Dailey" the sweeping novels of the 80's. She describes a fictional place in New Mexico to a "T". What I did not like about this book was.... as someone mentioned the way it ended. There were some loose ends that were tied up but done so in the last 4 pages which gave me a "let-down" feeling. The characters were engaging but some things that happened in the book just didn't make much sense so I'm glad I have it to add to my collection but I would really like to caution someone if you are just purchasing it to add to your collection hold off and wait to get it at a reasonable price. Because in my opinion the story is not worth the price that I have seen on auctions.

It is, but it isn't Grand Deveraux Style.

I can tell this is one of her earlier works, perhaps written before The Enchanted land, but published after it. And finally having gotten hold of a copy, I can see why it was allowed to go out of print.

I'm glad to own a copy, and will probably never relinquish it, because I wanted the complete Deveraux collection, and this one marked its completion. However, I have to admit a serious disappointment, especially since I prefer her earlier works to her later ones.

To forewarn all the romance fans--this is not a romance. It's a grand story of a woman who grows up and discovers herself, and a fantastic tale of the business she starts, but overall, it's rather drawn-out and the conclusion seems anti-climactic.

Anyone who wants the complete collection should buy this, definitely, and even read it through, but I doubt it'll be a favorite.

I WAS LUCKY TO FIND THIS BOOK IN MY LOCAL LIBRARY. I HAVE READ ALL OF JUDE DEVERAUX'S BOOKS (22) I HAVE BEEN SEARCHING FOR IT FOREVER. IT IS NOT HER USUAL STYLE, BUT I WAS VERY PLEASED WITH IT. AS A MATTER OF FACT, I HAD TO RATION IT OUT SO THAT I WOULD NOT RUSH THROUGH IT AND MISS SOMETHING. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK.

Excellent overview

Grudem's book is an excellent overview of the basics of Chistian beliefs from a Reformed point of view. The chapters are between 3-5 pages, just long enough for a new Christian to read and digest the material without getting bogged down in a lot of detailed discussion. That is not to say that this book is light on doctrine or details. All of the fundamentals are there. While it is written from a Reformed point of view, the book is applicable for all evangelical Christian perspectives. I know Pentecostal churches that use this book for new Christian classes. I am using this book as a text for a Christian Foundations class, and it is working well. For a new Christian, or for someone wanting to know the basics of Christian beliefs, this is a great starting point. For more in-depth study, I would also recommend Grudem's book Bible Doctrines, which is the next step up, and also his book Systematic Theology, which is extremely readable and detailed.

This book is the best-kept secret in the world of college preparation!
Prior to the publishing of this book I actually met Mr. Davidson at a workshop he gave about succeeding in college. He is very open to talk about his difficult, yet life-changing journey through college, and happy to give as much advice to help students achieve the same success he did. I applied the tips and tools he shared in his workshop, and it did WONDERS for me! I never thought it would be possible to STUDY LESS and DO BETTER!!

Mr. Davidson does this by introducing you to unique study techniques that he discovered around midway through his college years.

He addresses study techniques many times by using his or his colleagues' college experiences to explain his concepts, but the information is just as valuable to high school students, if not more so! Reading this book can help high schoolers begin to have an idea of the college culture, and what to prepare for when the time finally comes. I certainly wish I knew this stuff before I started college!

In addition to the aforementioned, this book also includes interviews with top students who have graduated from Ivy League universities inquiring about their success in being a successful student; a chapter on lifestyle and food choices, and how he actually LOST WEIGHT during one of his years in college, for diet also contributes to being a great student; and finally, this book addresses one of the most feared situations millions of students face after graduating from college: job hunting, and how to be successfully land a position with the company of your choice.

If you think by my overly-excited writing tone that I'm someone who has been paid off to write this review, I can promise you that I'm not. I'm just a college student who has benefited immensely from Mr. Davidson's words of wisdom, a student who did fairly well in high school, but got shot down by college and struggled to pick myself back up. The contents of this book played a major role in being the helping hand that picked me up off the ground, and actually applying the principles I learned in this book are what got me walking forward again. And I hope after reading this review that you are convinced to purchase this book and benefit from it just as much as I have. Do yourself a favor, BUY and APPLY!!

I highly recommend this book

I didn't think this would be that interesting to read but I was mistaken, it is interesting, informative and humorous. It is a valuable tool for anyone in high school or in college and I will be giving this book as gifts to friends who are still going to school full time. It is also helpful for anyone taking a class, no matter their age! I highly recommend this book.

Great Tool For College Success

I was very fortunate to know a professor who allowed me to borrow The College Success Cheat Sheet to help me with the structure of my academic life. I was often exhausted from studying/cramming that night before, and this professor thought that the book would help me to learn how to get good grades without killing myself. This book helped give me vital tips for my success in my senior year of undergrad. Using the 'spacing effect' that Mr. Davidson suggested in Chapter 1 was something that had the biggest impact on me. I am quite the lazy person, so this allows me to spend less time cramming and more time thoroughly knowing the material. This was the greatest improvement for me because I feel like I have more time to get things done and it really helps on my midterms and comprehensive finals. There was one class that was very difficult for me and I received an F on the first quiz, but after reading some of the tips in this book and implementing them into my studying habits I received a B on the second quiz and an A on the midterm. The way that I used this idea into my course study was through the homework app, available in the app store, which allows me to get alerts and tells me where to focus my time. Another part of the book that really spoke to me was in Chapter 10 where prioritizing and distractions where highlighted. This chapter helped me to learn how to balance long-term assignments that are worth a lot of points with short-term assignments that are worth less points, and knowing when to give attention to an assignment. I am easily distracted by my environment so eliminating potential distractions and placing myself in a conducive learning environment makes a huge difference in my productivity. And last but not least, from reading Chapter 11 I found that taking a day of rest or even breaks when it becomes difficult to study can make me feel refreshed and renewed to give it another try. We all need cheat sheets in our lives and even though it may seem hard to take the time to do outside reading, it really helps in the end and allows you do get through college less stressed and more successful.
