Outstanding in-depth intro to developmental biology

I think Scott Gilbert has done an absolutely stupendous job in writing this clearly written, beautifully illustrated and up-to-date exposition of developmental biology. The concluding chapter on evolutionary developmental biology is brief but very well done. The websites associated with the book and the CD provide much additional information. Definitely the premier textbook in this area. Don't tackle it without having taken at least a course in cell biology, and some exposure to biochemistry and genetics would be helpful as well. The last time I read a dev bio textbook was when I was in college 30 years ago; how things have changed!

My favorite developmental biology text of all time. Now in its' 6th edition it includes an interactive CD with videos and photos. It also has referenced many valuable websites. A truely great book with a fine sensibity to the historical perspectives of science and the complexity and beauty of natural forms. Gilbert publishes regularly in the field of develomental biology and his expertise is obvious.

Good, but single author can't handle all

This is a superb textbook which includes a wide scope of current developmental biology. The new version also embraces a modern interactive technology. It's really cool! The text is fluent and consistent because a single author wrote all the chapters. However, its drawback is that the author can't know all the things. This is contrast to other reputated textbooks such as Molecular Biology of the Cell, Principles of Neural Science, etc., written by multiple authors who have expertises in each chapter. Developmental biology has expanded and now covers evolution, plants, and even behavior. I think Dr. Scott Gilbert is a genius. But I can't believe he can handle all of these stuffs. It's time to ask some people to write each chapter.

There are many books on success and Dayna Steele writes in a practical, easy to read way that drives the message home and engages you to begin the process. This is one of the best business/personal success books that you will ever read; not to mention that she goes one step beyond to engage the reader with amazing cartoon style depictions of the success tips. If you want to be successful, take on this challenge and do these 101 daily activities. It is always the easy, foundational things that we blow off thinking, how could that work? I remember Dayna Steele when I was growing up, she rocked on with KLOL and carried it over to this book. I'm going to purchased this book for my daughter who is going to be a freshman at UT. Simple, yes, but balanced, no...

My comments are about the A Call to Arms (ACTA) game. Overall, ACTA isn't a very balanced space combat game. For example, the one for one, back and forth method for initiative meant that, side A with more units than side B, always had units to move after side B was done, even if side A lost to side B on initiative. It was also just as easy to score a crippling critical hit on a large ship as a small one. To make matters worse, the point system for balancing forces (also know as the Fleet Allocation Point system or FAP), wasn't balanced and clearly favored large numbers of small ships over small numbers of large ships. And last, but certainly not least, were the uneven battles between some of the races (for example, try playing the Pak against the Vorlons or the Raiders against the Shadows, etc). In theory, the recent Powers and Principalities (P&P) supplement was supposed to address some of these issues but I would exercise caution about sinking money into this game line until you are sure that they did...

Excellent RPG

This game is well done. Lots of fun. A must for RPG lovers and Babylon Lovers. Love the fredom of using minitures or use the splendit counters that come with the game.
